This park has several entries in my blog but never enough I past grand part of my stay in Madrid here, it was cheap and great to play, meet friends and do all the young boy wanted to do It has stayed in my heart ever since Over the years, I have the opportunity to come back to Madrid and the Parque del Buen Retiro park is a must. To be in Madrid need to have visited , I can come back a thousand times and still will missed it once leaving. Because the Retiro park for me is part of what we say , from Madrid to heaven and a hole in the sky to look down on it every day !!! I keep looking at it from wherever I am Hope you can visit it and enjoy the post as I.
I am updating this older post on another visit to Madrid and of course ,another visit to the Retiro park. I have come with wife and boys , and parents, and taken friends here to show off Sublime !
You know this was a Royal park and even if cutoff a lot still has 125 hectares or 4,5 km of perimeter; from the beginning it was much larger something like 145 hectares. It was created from 1630 to 1640. The park has a big pond ,basin, lake as you like in a rectangular fashion where there is a huge monument to king Alfonso XII with his equestrian statue in bronze done in 1904. There is also a rosary or roselada and 12 other statues , fountains and two palaces such as Cristal and Velazquez. There is an Egyptian fountain, kiosks for food, boat rentals, bike rentals jogging trails, and exercise trails, Chinese pagoda etc etc. It has about 19000 trees of 167 different species. In its territory there is the Royal National Observatory, and remnants of the Hermitage of San Pelayo and San Isidoro (Saint Pelagius and Saint Isidore) . The Parque del Buen Retiro makes reference to the functionality of the now gone Cuarto Real (Royal quarters), a site annex to the Monastery of the Jerónimos , where the kings retire to meditate or entertainment.
All wonderful for a day or weekend family trip now. The Retiro park is now an Unesco World Heritage Site under the name “El Paseo del Prado y el Buen Retiro. Paisaje de las Artes y las Ciencias” or sort of the Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro, landscapes of Arts and Sciences. You will do well to search in my blog for my other many posts on the Retiro park, and again is a must in Madrid ; you cannot come to the city and not visited it.
