The Posada de la Santa Hermandad of Toledo!!

Once again clearing my vaults of pictures found some not shown yet in my blog as far as I can see. This is a pity as these are marvels in architecture and history of the world culture city of Toledo.  Therefore, time to make up and here is my take on the wonderful Posada de la Santa Hermandad of Toledo!!

The Posada de la Santa Hermandad is located on Calle de la Hermandad, inside the old quarter of the city of Toledo. An interesting building was the Posada de la Hermandad or brotherhood created to protect the farmers from bandits even if today is used for exhibitions by the city.

The Posada de la Hermandad is located in front of what was once known as Calle de la Tripería (today Calle Sixto Ramón Parro) and is bordering the Market and the Rojas Theater (see post). It is a three-story building including the basement where the prisons of the Santa Hermandad Vieja de Toledo were located. Through the main door, the gang members entered the hall where the guardhouse would possibly be, from where they had access to a room located to the right that could have been the Court’s office and where the councils took place. In the basement were the four dungeons , rectangular in shape and vaulted, whose access was through a staircase where there was a rake, to prevent prisoners from escaping. On the first floor of the building was the court room where the trials of detained prisoners were held.

The old Brotherhood of Colmeneros de Toledo, later known as the Santa Hermandad Vieja de Toledo, was created by the owners of beehives to put order and monitor their properties and the territory where they had jurisdiction. It would be at the end of the 13C,when it already appeared in the documents receiving the support of the city of Toledo itself.

In November 1300 this group would be the Brotherhood of Toledo, Talavera and Ciudad Real. Successive privileges granted by kings such as Fernando IV, Alfonso XI, Pedro I or Juan II, will make the brotherhoods take on special importance when it comes to administering justice and that their gangsters will be feared and respected throughout the region , They would be precisely the grandparents of Carlos I , that is, the Catholic Monarchs, who reorganized the brotherhoods and extended them to the entire kingdom in 1476, in the Cortes de Madrigal. During the 18C, these brotherhoods continued to watch over the hives and mountains, collecting certain taxes such as the twelfths, but it would be with the of1835 when Isabel II dissolved the Holy Brotherhoods of Toledo, Talavera and Ciudad Real. Upon the death of the last owner, it was transformed into an inn and hence the current name of the building as posada=inn or Posada de la Hermandad.
