The queen of Pedro Ximénez wine in the Cordoba countryside has claimed the title of the new “Spanish City of Wine.” The town of Montilla was selected by representatives of the Asociacion Española de Ciudades del Vino (ACEVIN) or Spanish Association of Wine Cities for the year 2027. Together with other towns in the region, it is part of the Montilla-Moriles Wine Route, one of 38 routes certified by Acevin. The official ACEVIN on Montilla : https://www.acevin.es/montilla

A report by Coravin, based on surveys of over 2,600 consumers across five countries, indicates that 58.1% of Americans and 53% of the French are ordering wine by the glass more frequently than they did two years ago. However, they are no longer satisfied with the usual offerings; they now demand greater variety, the opportunity to taste before committing, and assurances of freshness. The five establishments featured below are part of the newly launched The Coravin Guide. Its introduction in Spain includes a partnership with TEMPOS Vega Sicilia, which will make the group’s wines available by the glass at select venues with specific dates and participating locations. I give my fav area as lived not far and visit always opposite the Puerta de Alcalá, Berria at Plaza de la Independencia, 6 , exemplifies the wine bar concept, where wine is the primary focus of the visit. Sommelier Mario Ayllón oversees a list featuring over 3,000 labels and more than 100 options by the glass a selection recently honored with a *Wine Spectator* Grand Award. On the other side of the Puerta de Alcalá, Aarde at Plaza de la Independencia, 10, combines a cellar of over 1,000 bottled wines with a selection of more than 60 wines available by the glass. The most unique stop on this route is found within Club Metrópolis: Spa de Langostas at Calle de Alcalá, 39, an underground dining space designed to resemble a sea grotto, with a culinary focus on lobster. Regarding its wine program, the venue specializes in Champagne and Spanish wines, with a particular emphasis on the Rioja D.O.Ca. The official The Coravin Guide : https://guide.coravin.com/
The La Copita Asturiana, a restaurant with over 60 years of history ,and where Los Javis (Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi) filmed part of La bola negra has been run by María Mayo’s family since 1959. The film is an adaptation from Federico García Lorca’s unfinished literary project La bola noire or the dark ball, the film draws inspiration from the play La piedra oscura or the dark stone by Alberto Conejero. The play written by Conejero, who also penned the film’s screenplay explores the romance between Lorca and the footballer Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, both of whom were victims of the Spanish Civil War. The film, which notably won the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Audience Award at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the San Sebastián International Film Festival, will represent Spain at the 99th Academy Awards in March 2027. Nubel has been revamped, making a visit to the Reina Sofía Museum (see post), even more enticing. The La Fábrica Group has taken the helm of the restaurant, located within the building designed by Jean Nouvel. After visiting the Reina Sofía taking in works such as Picasso’s Guernica, Maruja Mallo’s La Verbena, José Solana’s La tertulia del Café de Pombo, and Joan Miró’s La sonrisa de alas flameantes, and with our minds full of art, we sat down at a table in the newly renovated Nubel. The restaurant has reopened under the stewardship of the La Fábrica Group and the Life Gourmet Group, featuring an informal menu packed with highly tempting bites. Valduero has produced the first Rosado Gran Reserva from the Ribera del Duero region (see post), a blend of 55% Tempranillo aka Tinto Fino, and 45% Albillo Mayor. The grapes are macerated and fermented together using indigenous yeasts, ensuring both varieties contribute to the winemaking process from the very start. The Albillo Mayor lends freshness and vibrancy, while the Tempranillo provides structure and depth. The grapes originate from La Yunquera and Fuentepinedo, two estates located at an altitude of 850 to 900 meters. There, in soils composed of sandy pebbles and clay, grow vines over 30 years old cultivated without irrigation and nourished with natural fertilizer. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes an extended aging process: four years in barrels and another two in the bottle, which helps develop its complexity and nuanced aromatics. In the glass, it displays a ruby hue with golden highlights. On the nose, red fruit notes blend with hints of oak, vanilla, rosemary, and a touch of smokiness. On the palate, the freshness of the Albillo Mayor balances the structure of the Tempranillo, while subtle notes of cassis and spice round out its profile. In the D.O. Rueda, (see post) a region synonymous with the Verdejo grape, Bodega Cuatro Rayas steps off the beaten path to shine a spotlight on Viognier. This white wine, part of the #CO Elena Collection 2025, offers a fresh perspective on the appellation: it is aromatic, expressive, and designed to be enjoyed without any fuss. It is the perfect bottle for a casual meal, for those looking to try something different, or for sparking conversation around the table. It also serves as a reminder that this region in the province of Valladolid has more to offer than just its most famous grape variety. The Borsao Tres Picos in the Campo de Borja region of Aragon, the Garnacha grape finds one of its most expressive terroirs. Tres Picos crafted from grapes grown in high-altitude mountain vineyards between 600 and 700 meters is one of the labels that has best helped tell that story. It brings together ripe red fruit, notes of vanilla and clove, and a subtle toasted undertone, the result of five months spent in French oak. Broad, juicy, and featuring smooth tannins, this red wine pairs beautifully with meat, grilled vegetables, or a hearty, substantial stew. The Marco Real Homenaje Tinto hailing from Olite, in Navarra, a red blend of Tempranillo and Merlot offers an approachable, pleasant, and unpretentious drinking experience. Four months of aging in oak barrels add a touch of toast and spice, without ever overshadowing the red fruit that defines the wine’s character. It is a versatile choice for many occasions whether enjoyed at a tapas bar, during a casual meal, or alongside a spread of cured meats and long, engaging conversation. Simple in the best sense of the word, it provides an excellent everyday option with a distinct Navarrese flair. Price: 5.80 euros in Spain.
