This is Tazumal of Chalchuapa in El Salvador !!

Once again looking in my vault of pictures found one picture, only one that I can find but worth mentioning in my blog. This was the desire to see more of the place of our world in one business trip to El Salvador many years ago,. The locals told me about it so asked to see it and they took me there by car from San Salvador, a memorable road warrior trip, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on this is Tazumal of Chalchuapa in El Salvador !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Chalchuapa of which name comes from the Náhuat language and means ‘río de jade’ or ‘donde abunda el jade’) is a city and district of the town of Santa Ana West in the Santa Ana department, in the western zone of El Salvador, For info I was told you can do this trip by bus on bus 218 from Santa Ana, It is 18 km away along the Pan American highway or N13 , However, I came with locals who drove 84 km from San Salvador on the Pan American Highway or N1 passing by Santa Ana,

Tazumal is a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site located in just bordering the city. Many of them come from the farm where they meet the main structures, when they started the excavations by Stanley Boggs (an American archaeologist who worked and developed archaeology in El Salvador, who was called the Father of Salvadoran Archaeology.) in the decade of 1940s Its name comes from the farm where the main structures were located, when excavations began in the 1940s. The pre-Hispanic occupation of the city was observed in locations such as Tazumal, Casa Blanca, El Trapiche, Las Victorias, Peñate, Laguna Seca and Laguna Cuzcachapa, among others, which shows that the city experienced all the times of the pre-Columbian era, which is why it was one of those towns with the oldest human continous occupation of El Salvador.

The occupation of Tazumal took place from 1200 B.C. Its largest structure measures 24 meters in height, has twelve steps or platforms, and tombs with more than 116 vessels, jade jewelry, “mirrors” of iron pyrite, ball game devices and ceramics in the shape of lizards were found in the site. Also, the Stone of the Victories is found which consists of a monolith of Olmec influence that presents four different petro-engravings on its four sides, dated around 700 B.C. Tazumal was formally researched in 1940 by archaeologist Stanley Boggs, who identified 13 structures, from small platforms to the large mound, with 24 meters in height. The Stanley Boggs Museum describes the housing sequence of pre-Hispanic cultures of the Pre-classic, Classic, and Post-classic periods, and presents the different sites that make up the archaeological area of Chalchuapa, such as: El Trapiche, Laguna Cuscachapa, Las Victorias, Casa Blanca, Laguna Seca, and Grupo Peñate.

Archaeological excavations indicate that Tazumal was inhabited from the Classic to the Postclassic period and that the site had connections as far away as central Mexico, the northern Yucatán Peninsula, and lower Central America. The metal artifacts from the complex date to the 8C and are among the oldest metal artifacts reported from Mesoamerica. It consists of a series of structures that were the setting for an important and sophisticated ceremonial center that expanded in different stages throughout its history. It was built in the Early Classic period (200 AD – 600 AD) and continued to be occupied in the Late Classic period (600 AD – 900 AD) and later period (900 AD – 1200 AD). It is a representation of Mayan culture in the Classic and modern in the post-Classic. It is influenced by the length of its history by Copán and Teotihuacán (in the Classic), and by the Toltecs (in the post-Classic). Enough said…..
