I bring you down to the Basques of Spain, my route for many years between France and Spain, Incidentilly, the first time in this City was while on the beaches of the Médoc in Bordeaux and we decided back in 1992 to come down for a closer look always in my road warrior trails, and it caught me. The choices are endless and very nice spots as we walked all over once in town, I like to bring an older pictures from my cd rom vault that I feel needed to be in my blog, for the memories of always, Therefore, here is my take on the Monte Urgull of San Sebastian !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.
San Sebastian is of the most lively cities in Spain, rich in Basque tradition and close to the French border;you can’t ask for more. The city is well connected to Madrid and Barcelona as well as Paris. Capital city of the province of Gipuzkoa. From the 1914 it was built up following Haussmanian architecture as in Paris. That is why is so beautiful…!
Monte Urgull is a peak located between the old town (Parte Zaharra/Parte Vieja) and its New Promenade (Paseo Berria/Paseo Nuevo), on the San Sebastian seafront. A wide cornice promenade, the Paseo Nuevo allows one to drive almost completely around Mount Urgull. It offers beautiful views of the ocean and the bay. Let me tell you briefly on some of these things to see.
The Aquarium is the most modern facility in Europe, integrating innovative and spectacular resources and a large Marine Museum. It is an international benchmark in the field of research, dissemination, and exhibition of the marine world. One of its main attractions is the “Shark Aquarium,” the only one of its kind on the continent. A spectacular 360° acrylic tunnel, suspended in the water, allows visitors to explore it surrounded by sharks and rays, with a sensation similar to that of a scuba diver delving into the depths of the sea. Awesome !
The Bateria de Las Damas was during the time when Mount Urgull was a military zone, the women of San Sebastián collected water from a spring that flowed from the area of what is now the Paseo Nuevo. The only way to cross was through a path through the hills that ran through this battery. This made it a “casual” meeting place for soldiers and women, where groups and gatherings took place. Hence its name, the women’s battery. Today, it serves as an information point.
The Bateria Gobernador, located in the Governor’s Battery Guardhouse, the idea of a children’s library has been so well received that it has also been extended to people who want to spend some time reading while taking advantage of their walk in the mountains. It maintains its child-friendly character thanks to the afternoon activities specifically geared toward children.
The Castillo de la Santa Cruz de la Mota ,originally dates back to the 12C and was built by King Sancho the Great of Navarre. Subsequent kings and eras have given it its character, being successively rebuilt after it was destroyed by natural causes or war. It currently houses three chapels, one of them dedicated to the Christ of la Mota. Since 1950, it has been crowned by the statue of the Sacred Heart.(see pic), By extension, the locals popularly refer to the entire Monte Urgull as the Castillo or castle.

The Cementerio de los ingleses or the English cemetery is one of the most relaxing and attractive spaces on Monte Urgull. Inaugurated in 1924 as a memorial and tribute to the English soldiers who died in the battle of 1813, it is a military cemetery where soldiers and officers from other wars fought in the city are buried.
The Club Naùtico is a representative building of 1930s architecture, it symbolizes the fact that San Sebastián has always stood out for its avant-garde spirit. Designed by architects Aizpurua and Labayen, it is listed as one of the 10 most representative buildings of European rationalist architecture.
