This is Villanueva de Duero !!!

We were back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car of course and took time to see new areas and old repeat with some of them as introduction to my sons and our dog Rex ! I rented a small house in a off the beaten path country town that was just perfect ! I like to continue the saga of our new road warrior experiences even if now with less in our family, This post is on my latest road warrior tour of wonderful sublime Spain. These towns were a surprise as we had extra time with nothing planned so we took into the wonderland and wines of the road CL 610 ! Therefore, let me tell you about this is Villanueva de Duero !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Villanueva de Duero is located in the province of Valladolid, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León of the kingdom of Spain. The town rises on the left margin of the Duero River, about 18 km from Valladolid, 26 km from our town of Velliza, ,and 184 km from Madrid, The town is located upstream and is crossed by the CL-610 regional road, which is directed towards Serrada and Puente Duero towns, This regional road connects with the A6 highway at exit/salida 160, towards Madrid!

We saw the Church de Nuestra Sra de la Visitacion or of Our Lady of Visitation ,which is a Mudejar -style church of the 16C in brick, stone and tapial. It has three naves between rectangular pillars and semicircular arches, where the central, somewhat higher and broader than the sides, is covers with low barrel vault. At the foot of the church is the tower, stone in its first section and brick the rest, also crowned by an 18C scriptel of the 18C. Inside, in addition to the altarpiece, between the drawings of the church a Risen Christ stands out, a piety in polychrome alabaster of the mid -15C and two reliefs in wood, there are also drawings such as the Christ of Nazarene . The sculptures of the patterns of the town on San Antonio de Padua and Santa Isabel.

Other things you can see here with more time, me think are the Ermita de Cristo or Hermitage of Christ of the 18C , The ermita has reduced dimensions keeps several sculptures inside which highlights a 16C San Roque in polychrome wood. Also, the Cartuja de Nuestra Sra de Aniago or chartreuse of Our Lady of Aniago , it was a monastery founded by the Cartucians monks in the 15C. In 1441 Queen María de Aragón made the decision to donate her inheritance from Aniago to the Cartuja Order and a year later Pope Eugenio IV confirmed the donation. The queen asked to be founded with twenty -four monks; The first two arrived from the monastery of the Paular and took care of the commissioning of the Cartuja, Following the confiscation of Mendizábal, the exclaustration was final and its assets were auctioned. The Cartucian monastery ceased to exist as such in 1836. The artistic heritage was sold or distributed among different institutions, the buildings were abandoned to the inclement weather and pillage, Sadly.

A bit of history tell us that there is scarse information on Villanueva de Duero during the old age. Initially, this population was called the Cabañuelas, to pass in 1109 to be called Nueva Aldea, new because there was another previous village, and later the name of Aldeanueva de Aniago, because it was aniago territory. Already in 1630 the change of name to Villanueva de Duero occurs. In 1409, Juan Vázquez de Cepeda, Bishop of Segovia and advisor to the monarch Enrique III, buys Aniago and Aldea Nueva from the Council of Valladolid, to establish a monastery of regular canons of San Agustín. Subsequently, this monastery becomes the Cartuja of Our Lady of Aniago. The story of the town from this moment will be linked to the Cartuja in a succession of encounters and disagreements that will culminate in the final separation of both in 1807.
