The Church Santa María del Castillo of Olmedo !!!

We were back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car of course and took time to see new areas and old repeat with some of them as introduction to my sons and our dog Rex ! I rented a small house in a off the beaten path country town that was just perfect ! I like to continue the saga of our new road warrior experiences even if now with less in our family, This post is on my latest road warrior tour of wonderful sublime Spain.  Therefore, let me tell you about the Church Santa María del Castillo of Olmedo !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Olmedo is in the province of Valladolid in the autonomous community of Castilla Y-León in the kingdom of Spain, The city is a Mudejare architectural home. It is 60 km from my home base of Velliza, on the A6 and CL 602 roads, and 42 km from Valladolid ,and 147 km from Madrid, We were in town and parked by parking Plaza Mayor, superbe.

The Church Santa María del Castillo is located at Plaza de Santa. María, 6 with a 12C Romanesque portal, transformed into the Mudejar style in the 15C, and Gothic in the 16C. Before entering the church we observe a Romanesque cover of the first half of the 12C, blinded in 1720, and also a beautiful porch made in the 17C. Upon coat of their supports in the low Middle Ages the sexmers gathered. In the 16C, with the late Gothic suffered the transformations that are observed today in the presbytery and on the cover of the feet made of stone. The reforms continue in the 17 and following century it is modified the body of the church and second incorporates the tower spine and the baroque caulking of the main chapel.

Inside, a beautiful altarpiece conducted in the mid -16C assembly, with paintings on table that relates the episodes of the life of the Virgin , stands out as fundamental. In the first table on the side of the Gospel we see on a column the date on which 1550 was made. It is inspired by Plateresque art, that art that imitated the fine work of the silversmiths. Following in the presbytery we observe a beautiful Gothic tracery work carried out in the choral mountain range that surrounds the tabernacle from the monastery of the improved, and a baroque altar that has as decorative motifs Masonic symbols. In the chapel that opens in the nave of the Gospel, a baroque altarpiece of the 18C stands out, with paintings on the table of the 16C. This altarpiece can come from the former San Nicolás hospital, currently missing, and better known by the La Copera hospital. Next to it, the Renaissance Virgin with the child in his arms is worth highlighting. Two other sculptures also of good size representing Santa Águeda and San José with child of the 18C. Under the choir we find a beautiful reliquary in the form of a 16C drawer, contains 49 busts with relics inside each sculpture. This reliquary was donated by the monarch Felipe II to the convent de la Mejorana. On the epistle side we find a 17C baroque altarpiece with paintings of the same era. The central picture represents the visit of Jesus Christ to Nicodemus.
