Curiosities of Olmedo, part I !!!

We were back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car of course and took time to see new areas and old repeat with some of them as introduction to my sons and our dog Rex ! I rented a small house in a off the beaten path country town that was just perfect ! I like to continue the saga of our new road warrior experiences even if now with less in our family, This post is on my latest road warrior tour of wonderful sublime Spain.  Therefore, let me tell you about curiosities of Olmedo , part I !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Olmedo is in the province of Valladolid in the autonomous community of Castilla Y-León in the kingdom of Spain. The city is a Mudejare architectural home. It is 60 km from my home base of Velliza, on the A6 and CL 602 roads, and 42 km from Valladolid ,and 147 km from Madrid, We were in town and parked by parking Plaza Mayor, superbe.

This imposing arc makes its way on the wall. One of the original seven arches that opened their gates, in this case to the transfer between Olmedo and Medina del Campo. From the old walled enclosure, today the south and western sides remain in better condition. The other two north and eastern zones have served for centuries of quarry for the construction of the town, We took the Calle San Miguel to ascend to the Arco de San Miguel, A splendid past is perceived through it in the medieval era when Olmedo received its denomination of Villa de los Seven Sietes or town of the seven seven, because it had seven villages, seven entrance arches, seven churches, seven convents, seven seats, seven pipes or fountains and seven noble houses. It got this name for being right next to the Church of San Miguel. It has a double brick arch flanked by two masonry cubes ,one square and another circular, topped in saw teeth. From this gate all the wall that can be seen along the Paseo de la Soterraña.

The old Arco de San Francisco at the Calle de Arco de San Francisco was the old entrance to the convent, A place that is famous for the play by Lope de Vega, which is entitled ‘El Caballero de Olmedo’ written between 1620 and 1625 and is based, like many other works by this author, on a popular song. “That at night they killed the gentleman, the Medina gala, Olmedo’s flower,” says the song. Now there is the El Caballero de Olmedo Restaurant located in the former convent of San Francisco from the 16C. The former convent of San Francisco was active from1766 to 1835. Now the arc or arco is in ruins.

The Plaza Mayor is in the historic center of the city, it is curiously triangular in shape, surrounded by typical castilian buildings, two or three stages and generally built in brick and stone, with arcades in their ground floor. In their premises, there are several restaurants and cafeterias with terraces. The most remarkable building in the square is the old city hall which is currently a cultural center. At the other end of the square, we find the Palais de la Real Chancillería and the Casa del Reloj or Clock House, which now houses exhibitions and library rooms. The central area of the square is occupied by gardens where there are stone benches to sit. In the center opens a kind of small place where the city’s arms shield is located. The main pedestrian streets of the historic center leave from here.

The Casa Torre Reloj or House – Clock Tower is in the Plaza Mayor. The building that welcomes the Municipal Exhibition Chamber on the ground ,this corregidor lieutenant, by delegation, settled the civil and criminal lawsuits among the residents of the town and their land, in the first instance. The headquarters between 1527-1528 was again , when the Royal Chancery of Valladolid moved to Olmedo. On one side of the audience was the royal prison, modified around 1741. The works carried out have returned to light the structure.
