The City of Salamanca is capital of the province of Salamanca located in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, and in the kingdom of Spain. In 1988, the Old City was declared a World Heritage for UNESCO, The City is located 109 km from Ávila, 121 km from Valladolid, 123 km from Portugal and 214 km from Madrid.

The Church de Nuestra Señora del Carmen aka Church del Carmen from Above, is a Baroque church that is located in the Plaza Los Bandos. This is the only construction that remains of the former convent and school of San Elías de los Carmelitas Descalzos, which occupied the rear of the Church including the space of the current Plaza de la Libertad.

The works of the Church of Our Lady of Carmen, were carried out between 1694 and 1703 with three naves, being the barrel vault and the sides with domes on pechinas. The facade has three bodies topped with triangular pediment with two bell -flashed swords flanking it. In the second body, a niche with the image of San Elías, inspiration of the founders of the Order of Carmen.

A bit of history tell us that in 581 the College of San Elías had founded in Salamanca. At first, the Carmelites settled in the San Lázaro hospital in the Arrabal del Puente. After the flood and practice destruction of the convent by a flood, the religious moved to a property donated by the Monroy family, where they built their new church and convent. With the French invasion the friars had to leave the foundation in 1809. later they returned until in 1835 they were expelled by the confiscal laws and never recovered it again. In 1857 the former convent Church became a parish church, which assumed the previous parish of Santo Tomé, whose Romanesque temple in the Plaza de los was demolished. In 1894 the barefoot Carmelites returned to Salamanca settling in the church of Santa María Magdalena, next to which they built a new convent. The Magdalena Church was restored and expanded in 1918, knowing itself as “Nueva del Carmen Church” to differentiate it from the previous ones.
