The City of Salamanca is capital of the province of Salama nca located in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, and in the kingdom of Spain. In 1988, the Old City was declared a World Heritage for UNESCO, The City is located 109 km from Ávila, 121 km from Valladolid, 123 km from Portugal and 214 km from Madrid.
I tackle a huge marvelous task on a wonderful university full of history, architecture and lively quarters for centuries. The task cannot be done in one post or even two; I will give you and me a taste of it, and will be back eventually. This is the University of Salamanca!
The University of Salamanca Patio de Escuelas 1 is the oldest university in operation in Spain and the Hispanic world and the third oldest in Europe. The Studium Generale, germ of the University, instituted in 1218 by Alfonso IX de León, was the second oldest in Spain, was the first European educational institution to obtain the title properly of University, by the Royal cellule of Alfonso X the Wise on November 9, 1252, subsequently ratified by Licentia located doctorate of Pope Alejandro IV in 1255 , Its origin, were cathedral schools whose documented existence dates back at least at least the year 1174, when its masterschool appears collected in some concord documents this fact presupposes that the creation of the position of Master of the Cathedral schools took place in the 12C, either in the reign of Fernando II of León or in that of his predecessor Alfonso VII. The University of Salamanca thus became the first in Europe to have a public library. Until the 15C, classes were taught in the cloister of the Old Cathedral, in houses rented to the superintendent and in the Church of San Benito. The first university building was that of the San Bartolomé College began to build in 1401 shortly before, the Aragonese Cardinal Pedro de Luna, which would later be the Antipope Benedict XIII, a great protector of the institution, promoted the purchase of the first lots and In the constitutions of 1411 he forced the construction of major schools known as the historic building of the University. Almost followed in 1413, King Juan II promoted the construction of the Hospital del Estudio (current rector) and later in 1428 the building of minor schools began. The first constitutions of the university were granted by the antiPope Benedict XIII. In 1422 they were replaced by those of Martín V. In addition to schools, the teachings were taught in the major and minor schools or in convents of religious orders. Salamanca also had countless minor schools and other university centers of diverse type. The Summer Course for foreigners organized by the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters since 1964, with a curriculum similar to that of the Higher Course of Hispanic Philology that included studies in language, literature, history, geography, art and thought of Spain, The students of the Summer course for foreigners came mainly from the United States (between 30%and 50%) and France (around 30%) currently the University of Salamanca is constituted by seventeen faculties: Fine Arts, Biology, Sciences, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences , Chemical Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Business, Education, Nursing and Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Philology, Philosophy, Geography and History, Medicine, Psychology and Translation and Documentation.
