This is Turégano !!!

I am taking you back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car always except once by plane, and on my road warrior trails took time to see this wonderful village of Turégano, It really needs more time but on my road warrior trails we will be back eventually, I am glad found me new pictures in my cd rom vault to write this post for you and meTherefore, here is my take on this is Turégano !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The village of Turégano is located in the province of Segovia, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, and in the kingdom of Spain. It has a population of 1,017 inhabitants (INE 2024), .It is 39 km from Segovia, 105 km from Valladolid, 146 km from Madrid, and 1091 km from my current home,I came here from my rental house in Velliza going to Madrid and on my road warrior trails took a swing to it, from the A6 dir Madrid bear off left on the CL602 after Medina del Campo cross the N601 road continue going around Cuellar on the A601 road continue to Navalmanzano before town get on the SG222 road dir Aguilafuente, continue and in Turégano, bear left on the CL603 road to castle.

At the foot of the castle lies its magnificent porticoed square, called the Plaza de España or locally known as the square of a hundred posts. Pure Castilian style, its arcades are formed by stone columns and wooden wrought ironwork. It is decorated with a square-shaped bullring during the festivities in honor of the Sweet Name of Mary, held on the first weekend of September. From here you can see the village greatest attraction ,the castle, a symbol of the town, supposedly of Celtiberian origins, according to some ancient authors. However, it is difficult to say who was responsible for the construction of the fortress. Ferdinand the Catholic spent a few days in the castle in 1474, before meeting his wife Isabel I the Catholic in Segovia. This fact testifies to the importance this place once had. It also served as a state prison. Three centuries later, defensive elements were added that transformed it into the fortress-church it is today. The entrance, where the episcopal coat of arms can be seen, is protected by two towers.

A unique feature of this castle is that the Church of San Miguel Arcángel is integrated into its construction. It consists of a main nave and a side nave corresponding to the Gospel side. The temple houses numerous valuable liturgical and devotional objects from the town’s now-disappeared churches.

The Museo forestal or Forestry Museum is located 3 km from the village, in a pine forest, it is located in the former Casa del Ingeniero or Engineer’s House, restored for this purpose. It displays the various pine species in the area and the flora associated with them, and provides information on traditional methods of pine forest exploitation: wood, resin, pine nuts, pine cones, and game, as well as on the tools used over time.

A bit of history I like tell us that in 1123, Urraca of Castile donated the town and lordship of Turégano to Pedro de Agén, of French origin, the first bishop of the restored diocese of Segovia. From then on, for eight centuries, the prelate of Segovia was the feudal lord of this village, which on several occasions received royal privileges. As the Bishop of Turégano was a member of the Royal Council of Castile, between 1425 and 1442, the village was the seat of the Chancery and Audience of the kingdom for six months a year. It was also a temporary residence of the Castilian monarchs and hosted the Cortes, especially in the 14-15C. During the uprising of the Comuneros of Castile, Turégano remained on the sidelines. In the 19C, the town suffered significant damage, first in the Peninsular War (locally independance war of Spain), and later in the First Carlist War. With the confiscation of Church property, the village ceased to be a lordship of the Bishop of Segovia and attained the status of a town.
