The Church San Martin of Trujillo, part II !!!

Once again, found me newer pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, This was a wonderful visit taken there with a local, he drove ! This is in my deep Spain, an area seldom visited and huge in monuments, history and architecture of Spain, Europe and the  Americas. The Church San Martín is of medieval origin, located in the city of Trujillo, in the province of Cáceres, Autonomous Community of Extremadura,in the kingdom of Spain. It is situated at one corner of the Plaza Mayor (see post). I like to bring you again to the Church Saint Martin of Trujillo, part II !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The exterior of the Church San Martin is dominated by the large volume of its sturdy stone structure on steps. It includes a simple Renaissance doorway at the foot, situated between a sober square-based tower on one side and a fine polygonal clock tower on the other; the latter is open at the top and topped with a pyramidal spire. The Church San Martin, has an irregular shape with stone ashlars to adapt to the terrain. On the right side of the main façade, there is a clock spire with a bell on top, and on the left, the bell tower, located within the great monumental complex of the city in the Plaza Mayor, Dating back to the time of the Catholic Monarchs is the Gothic-style Puerta de las Limas (Limes Gate). The Trujillo Council met in open sessions next to this gate. Its construction began in the 14C and continued for over a century, being completed with significant modifications to its initial layout during the second half of the 16C, around 1564. This taking advantage of the structure of an earlier 14C church damaged by the fighting during the War of Succession of the Crown of Castile, only the current bell tower remains of that church, It features architectural elements typical of the Gothic, in its main body and structure, and also of the Renaissance, in the works carried out in its final construction phase. This sacred place, with its roots dating back to the 13C, stands as an architectural masterpiece and an enduring symbol of the faith that has guided generations throughout the centuries. Originally small, it was expanded and modified in the 16C due to the demands of worship and the massive influx of people. It was also converted into a parish church.

Upon entering the Church San Martin, its Gothic architecture, with its elegant lines and intricate details, transports visitors to a time when church building was an artistic expression and a manifestation of faith. The side chapels house a rich collection of sculptures and paintings that narrate the religious history of the region. It also houses an 18C organ. Its interior consists of a single nave with four bays covered with star-shaped vaults, with chapels between the buttresses, dedicated to the repose of the city’s most important nobles, as was the tradition of the time. They contain important Renaissance tombs. Highlights inside include the main altarpiece, from the early Baroque period, the 18C organ, and several paintings from the last decade of the 15C. The current church works on the nave, choir, and tower were completed in the 16C, such as the sacristy, which was located near the chancel.
