On our meadering road warrior routes of Castilla La Mancha , we have reach Toledo many times. I first came here while living in Madrid in the early 1970’s, the city has hardly change ,really!! Well it is old indeed. What can I say about Toledo, simply superb ,the blending of cultures of Spain, a city kept in older times with the rhythem of today’s beat. All around you is history, the streets , pavements bricks and stones all history for the whole World. This is my Toledo , and glad to have to have found me new pictures in my cd rom vaults that should be in my blog for you and me, We came by car only once did it by train, and step out into the old world walking the wonderful streets squares and bridges of Toledo.
The Puente de Alcántara bridge is over the Tagus River. Currently it has two arches. Located at the foot of the Castle of San Servando (see post) and next to the Puerta de Alcántara, there is evidence of its construction in Roman times, when Toletum was founded. By the 10C, the third arch disappeared, reduced to a gate with a horseshoe arch. It was one of the bridges that gave entrance to the city and in the Middle Ages was a mandatory entrance for all pilgrims.

Under the reign of Alfonso X it suffered serious damage and was rebuilt. The western tower belongs to this last period, later modified and decorated under the reign of the Catholic Monarchs,(Fernando and Isabel I) whose coat of arms adorn its walls. The eastern tower was replaced by a Baroque triumphal arch in 1721, given its ruinous state. The bridge features two pairs of sidings, one classical crowning the wide buttresses of the river arch toward the entrance to the city, while the other pair consists of two rectangular cantilevered openings toward the bridge’s access arch. It is a Roman construction erected in the 3C, that became a passageway for Roman roads to cross the river and enter the city. Rebuilt numerous times, one of which was in the 10C by Alef, son of Mohomat Alameri, in 997, as recorded in an inscription. Its current name comes from this period, from the Arabic “Alcántara,” meaning bridge.
