I bring you to the memorable town of Sabiñanigo. I have been by here several times and did came in with my usual road warrior trails going elsewhere. One spot needed to have in my blog for the memories of always even if need to do so in my black and white series, no pictures, I drove here as a curiosity as we were near and cannot find a picture ! Oh well, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on this is Sabiñanigo !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.
The town of Sabiñánigo is in the province of Huesca, the autonomous community of Aragon in the kingdom of Spain. It has a population of 9,592 inhabitants (INE 2024) and its municipal area, of 586.8 km², is the largest in its province. The town is 18 km from Jaca, 54 km from Huesca, 54 km from Urdos, France ; 120 km from Zaragoza, and 420 km from Madrid, We saw coming down on my road warrior trails from France along the N134 road which becomes the N330 passing glorious towns for us such as Canfranc, Villanua Castiello de Jaca ,and Jaca, Here we took the new road then A23 autovia Mudéjar which parallel the N330 until getting back into the N330 to City center Plaza Santa Ana and Plaza de España, After this town we continue thru the Tunel de Nueno on the A23 to Huesca and beyond to Zaragoza and Madrid.
Some of the thing to see here with more time are the Casa Abacial or Abbey House dates from 1589. In the 17C, the simple Baroque parish church dedicated to Saint Hippolytus was built, and the City/Town Hall was completed in 1605. Much more modern is “Pirenarium”, the Pyrenees Park, a complex inaugurated in 2006. It housed miniature models of the Pyrenees and all of Aragon and is located in the old army barracks. The from the period 1810-1830) in El Puente de Sabiñánigo, known as Casa Batanero, is home to the Ángel Orensanz Museum and Serrablo Arts. Opened in 1979, the ground floor reproduces the different rooms of a Pyrenean house with all its furnishings, while the second floor combines rooms dedicated to crafts with rooms specific to the home. In Sabiñánigo park is the apse of the parish church of Santa María de Gavín, destroyed in the Spanish Civil War of 1936 and dismantled and rebuilt in Sabiñánigo by the Friends of Serrablo Association, The Church of San Pedro de Lárrede, built around 1050 in the Aragonese Romanesque style, it is part of the group of churches known as Serrablo. A megalithic monument, the Ibirque dolmen, which stands on the top of a hill. It consists of a simple interior chamber , rectangular in plan and open to the east ,and a tumulus. It consists of a large cover slab, which hides most of the chamber, and four side slabs.
A bit of history I like tell us that the origin of Sabiñánigo is Roman and seems to be linked to the establishment of a military mansion, founded around the 2C, on the banks of the road that connected Osca (present-day Huesca) with the thermal baths of Panticosa. The first documented historical mention of Sabiñánigo is from 1035 where it appears as Savignaneco, and refers to its incorporation into the Kingdom of Aragon. Around 1137, in the middle of the medieval period, its status as a royal town is already mentioned, a category that it would maintain centuries later. At the end of the 19C, the construction of the railway that would link Zaragoza with France via Canfranc began. With the arrival of the railway in 1893, a train station was built near the town of Sabiñánigo. The new Sabiñánigo became a mandatory stopover on the way to the spa town of Panticosa, where people came to take the beneficial hot springs. During the Spanish Civil War, between September and November 1937, the Battle of Sabiñánigo took place in the area, in which the 43rd and 27th divisions of the Army of the Republic launched an offensive against the 1st Brigade of the 51st National Division and volunteers such as the Panthers of the Tena Valley and the Ski Company. The Republican army ultimately failed to conquer Sabiñánigo.
