The Jardin del Parterre garden was built during the reign of Felipe V on the site of another garden, the Garden of the Eight Streets or Ochavado, made up of 8 streets that crossed in a circular square. Due to its abandonment following the damage caused a century later, during the French invasion, Francisco Viet, chief gardener of the Campo del Moro Gardens, was commissioned to remodel it. The retaining wall that has prevailed to this day was raised and a viewpoint was built. A stone and brick fountain was included under the viewpoint, as well as two other alabaster fountains on the sides. The Puerta de Felipe IV (see pic on right) gate was installed in 1922 as a result of the transfer of the, until then, known as Gate of Mariana de Neoburgo, which was located between the Prado Museum and the Church of San Jerónimo el Real.

The Parterre was one of the first gardens on the French style done in Spain; work began in 1716 and finished in 1722. in the parterre the monument to Jacinto Benaverte, 1922 winner of the Nobel prize in Literature, Also, the  Fuente or fountain of Campanillas call for the tower of bells that was there now gone but still the name remains , A magical walk with beauty of top gardeners keeper all around you. here is an impressive tree such as the Ahuehuete also known as Mexican cypress ,planted in 1630, the oldest tree in the parkIt is located in the Parterre section where you can see it going in by the calle Alfonso XII. the tree measures 25 meters and looks like a candelabra as from its base many branches very thick comes out.
