This is Wiltingen in Germany !!!

And again taking out this town from other posts to give a post of its own, well deserving me think. Once upon a time my boys decided to go to Germany for some reason, and we were stuck with trying something different than our beloved Spain. We headed by car ,rented a house in Trier, and went out in our road warrior mode all over the western part of Germany. It was awesome! Therefore, let me tell you a bit on this is Wiltingen in Germany !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I

I am coming back at you to Germany to tell you about an interesting village , small town along my road warrior ways. We drove all over western Germany ,especially along the border with France and Luxembourg. Great rides!!!  This is part of our story on visiting Germany ; do see my several posts on the country in my blog!  These are the towns you yearned to visit off the beaten path country towns with nice monuments to boot.

The village of Wiltingen is in the Verbandsgemeinde Konz, in the district of Trier-Sarrebourg, in Rhineland-Palatinate state, in western Germany. It is about 9 km from Trier on the lower Saar river between Konz and Saarburg.

The Church Saint Martin in the center of the village, which is already known as the Mother Church in 1030. It belonged to the Abbey of St. Mary in Trier.  The present church was built in 1909/10. In addition to the magnificently carved high altar of 1910, there are several old depictions of the patron Saint of the  in the church, such as a keystone of 1590 or the part of a stone altar around 1630. A wooden figure on the high altar shows the St. Martin as Bishop: Guardian and Teacher of Faith in His time as today.

It is one of the largest religious buildings in the Sarre region, especially in relation to the population of the area. The Church Saint Martin is surrounded by vineyards in the Sarre valley in the middle of the historic town center. The church is known locally as the Saar Cathedral. On July 16, 1910, the neo-Gothic building was consecrated in a solemn pontifical Mass.  Wealthy donors covered a large portion of the construction costs. Many of their names can still be found in the large stained-glass windows of the church. A garden surrounds the church. This 18C Rectory is located just a few meters from the sacristy of the Saar Cathedral. When construction or renovation work is required in the church, Masses can be celebrated in the rectory’s cellar, the Martinsklause. It is appropriately furnished and decorated for this purpose.

Other things to see here are several villas belonging to winegrowers from the Gründerzeit (founding era) can be found here, notably the Scharzhöfe estate and the historic manor house of the van Volxem winery. Two sculptures created in 2007 as part of the Konzer Sculpture Symposium “Sculptures on the River”: “Fire Leap” near the town entrance close to the Saar riverbank and “Passagio Animato” on Galgenberg hill. Wiltingen Scharzhofberg vineyard, The new estate building of the van Volxem winery, on Schlossberg hill and the Westwall Museum Wiltingen

A bit of history tell us that the name Wiltingen is first mentioned in a property register of Mergen Abbey from the year 1030, confirmed by Archbishop Poppo of Trier. Later, in the Middle Ages until the end of the 18C, Wiltingen, together with the neighboring towns of Kanzem, formed its own lordship, an enclave within the Electorate of Trier and part of the Duchy of Luxembourg. The Barons of Warsberg exercised high, middle, and lower jurisdiction. On September 5, 1944, approximately 200 Hitler Youth boys from Hanau, aged 14 to 16, arrived in Wiltingen to work on the construction of the West Wall. A second group arrived in the first week of October, replacing the first. On July 18, 1946, Wiltingen, along with 80 other towns in the districts of Trier and Saarburg, was annexed to the Saar Territory, which had been separated from the rest of the French occupation zone in February 1946 and was no longer under the control of the Allied Control Council. On June 6, 1947, this territorial separation was reversed, with the exception of 21 towns, and Wiltingen thus became part of the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
