The Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes (see post) is a railway station located within the Atocha railway complex. Within the complex, it receives high-speed trains and most long-distance trains. The rest of the trains that stop at Atocha do so at Atocha-Cercanías station. It is a dead-end station, with 15 tracks ending in a buffer zone. Each track, except track 1, has a turnout in the middle of the platform that allows two trains to be placed on each track, and for the inner train to cross over to the other track, allowing three trains to operate simultaneously on every two tracks. The station was built between 1985 and 1992, behind the original Atocha train station from 1892, to mark the arrival of the Madrid-Seville high-speed line. It owes its name to the old Puerta de Atocha on the Felipe IV wall enclosure, which, located a few meters from the station, was one of the entrances to the city of Madrid. On March 3, 2022, it was announced that the station would be named after the Madrid writer Almudena Grandes.
