The Temple of Kukulcan of Chichén Itzà in Mexico !!!

Once again looking in my vault of pictures found one picture, only one that I can find but worth mentioning in my blog. This was the desire to see more of the place of our world in one of business trips to Mexico several years ago, before had family in Mérida! The locals told me about it so asked to see it and they took me there by plane from Mexico City to Mérida and by car to the temple, a memorable road warrior trip, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on the Temple of Kukulcan of Chichén Itzà in Mexico !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Castillo or castle aka the Temple of Kukulcan, is a Mesoamerican step-pyramid that dominates the center of the Chichen Itza archaeological site in the Mexican state of Yucatan. It is one of the paradigmatic buildings of Mayan architecture. It is a four-sided pyramid culminating in a rectangular temple. It sits on a rectangular platform 55.5 meters wide and has a height of 24 meters. Each side of the pyramid has a large staircase, 91 steps per side and one more leading to the upper temple, totaling 365 steps, one per day of the year.

The current temple was built in the 12C AD by the Itza Maya in their capital city of Chichén Itzá, originally founded in the 6C AD. Its architect has a pyramidal geometric shape; it has nine levels, four main facades, each with a central staircase, and an upper platform, topped by a small temple. In this construction, the Mayan entity Kukulcán (feathered serpent) was worshipped, which is why serpentine motifs can be seen in the architectural decoration. On the other hand, it also has symbols that allude to the most important numbers used in the solar agricultural calendar, the Tzolkin calendar (sacred calendar) and the calendar wheel. The alignment of the pyramid’s construction allows for the observation of various phenomena of light and shadow, which occur in its own body during the equinoxes and solstices each year. On July 7, 2007, the Kukulcán temple was recognized as one of the new seven wonders of the modern world, by a private initiative without the support of UNESCO, but with the recognition of millions of voters around the world.

Chichén Itzá or ‘Mouth of the Well of the Water Witches’ is one of the main Mayan archaeological sites in the Yucatán Peninsula. It is located just 2.5 km from the town of Pisté, in the district of Tinum, in the State of Yucatán. Chichén Itzá was founded around the year 250 AD, during “the first or small descent of the east” referred to in the chronicles, by the Chanes of Bacalar (who were later called Itzá and later Cocomes)

The Great Museum of Chichén Itzá is an archaeological site inaugurated on February 28, 2024, located in the town of Pisté. It is part of the Visitor Information Center (CATVI) and houses more than 1,000 artifacts, including 400 originals from various institutions and recent discoveries from the Mayan Train. The museum offers a journey through the history of Chichén Itzá through 14 thematic areas, highlighting the Sacred Cenote Room, with a multimedia recreation of this ceremonial site. It also exhibits sculptures from Chac Mool, a stone table with reliefs of captives, and offerings discovered in the sacbeo’ob (Mayan paths). With 3,400 m² of space, the facility includes exhibition halls, workshops, conferences, and a gastronomic center with Mayan language instruction. Its location allows access to tourists arriving at the Chichén Itzá station of the Mayan Train. There is a lot more to see here but me was on a business trip gladly kept a picture to show in my blog for the memories of always.

  1. The Pyramid of Kukulcan at Chichén Itzá represents, in our eyes, the pinnacle of Mayan civilisation. As a result, crowds of visitors flock to the site every day, just as they must have done during the great Mayan gatherings of times past. I was fortunate enough to visit the temple at a time when it was still possible to climb the stairs to the platform, something that is now prohibited, and rightly so.
