The Piazza Testaccio of Rome !!!

Well again, looking into my cd rom vault saw some pictures from our trip to Rome not yet in my blog and they should be for you and me. In our road walking tour of the city we came upon some nice squares or piazzas and this is the opportunity to have them here. Therefore, here is my take on the Piazza Testaccio of Rome !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I

The Piazza Testaccio square is, as the name may give away, the heart of the Testaccio neighbourhood. The Testaccio on the other side is what most Romans would describe to you as the most “Roman” neighbourhood in Rome, and I’d strongly agree. I’m talking about contemporary Rome. For many years, Piazza Testaccio has been the commercial heart of the district, home to one of the historic local markets of the city. Following the complete restyling of the square of 2015, the market moved to a new location. In this square was one of the most important and well-stocked markets in Rome. Around 1900, it was created by the will of the population to slow down massive urbanization. In 1821, the Mattatoio (Slaughterhouse) was built and was considered an excellent example of functional architecture, thus beginning the modern expansion of the area. Testaccio is a district in central Rome. It is rich in history and known by many as a gastronomic mecca. The Mercato Testaccio began in the historic square of the neighborhood until 2012, when it was moved to a more modern location nearby ,go there passing through via Marmorata and then via Alessandro Volta, to find the market.

Piazza Testaccio is named after the Latin “Mons Testaceus”,  monte dei Cocci, an artificial hill made from the fragments of amphorae (heads) from the nearby river port of Ripa Grande. The square was created at the beginning of the 20C with the original name of Piazza Mastro Giorgio, when intense building activity began on the plain around the mountain for the dwellings of the workers  along the Via Ostiense. For years, the square was the scene of the historic district market. Today, after the market’s relocation, Piazza Testaccio has once again gained light, thanks to the relocation of the Fontana delle Anfore or Fountain of the Amphoras, built in 1927  and housed in Piazza dell’Emporio from 1935 to 2014, due to structural problems; brought back to the center of the square, where it was initially located. At one of the corners of the square is the Madonnella, a copy of an ancient 17C image, preserved on the altar at the Church of Santa Maria Liberatrice.
