The Piazza Barberini of Rome !!!

Well again, looking into my cd rom vault saw some pictures from our trip to Rome not yet in my blog and they should be for you and me. In our road walking tour of the city we came upon some nice squares or piazzas and this is the opportunity to have them here. Therefore, here is my take on the Piazza Barberini of Rome !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Piazza Barberini is located on the Quirinal hill, straddling the rioni of Trevi and Colonna. Piazza Barberini takes its name from Palazzo Barberini ,Until the 18C, the square was used for the display of corpses for their identification.

A bit of history I like tell us that before its development in the 16C, the area was mainly occupied by villas and gardens. The buildings that surround it today date back to the 16C, but have been rebuilt. On the south side of the square is the 17C Palazzo Barberini, built for Cardinal Francesco Barberini, a remarkable example of Baroque architecture. The square was long a center of artistic activity, particularly with Spanish artists in the 18C. In the 19C, with the expansion of the Via Veneto and the construction of luxurious hotels, Piazza Barberini became a popular place for the European aristocracy and bourgeoisie. Literary cafés and salons were set up, attracting foreign intellectuals and artists. In the centre stands a famous sculpture by Bernini: the Triton Fountain (Fontana del Tritone), dating from 1642-1643, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII, a member of the Barberini family. It depicts the sea god Triton blowing into a conch shell. On the corner of Via Veneto, the Bee Fountain (Fontana delle Api) is another sculpture by Bernini from 1644, in the shape of a shell with bees, which are the emblem of the Barberini. An obelisk stood there from 1632 to 1822, transferred to the gardens of the Villa Medici.
