I like to tell you again about my road warrior trails in my dear Spain. Again, found me some older paper pictures of wonderful Viana in Navarra, glad I did find it and will need to show it to the world, I like to do justice to the place and give you an introduction, Therefore, here is my take on this is Viana !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
Viana is a city of the Navarra Foral community located in the non -Bascophone area of the province, Castilian is the only official language . The Camino Francés of the pilgrimage of Saint-James-de-Compostela goes through this town. It is located 81 km from Pamplona, 64 de Vitoria-Gasteiz, 132 km from Bilbao, and 330 km from Madrid, Viana is connected to Pamplona by the Autovía del Camino or A-12.
The Church Santa Maria is an important building built between the 13-14C, Large as a cathedral with its high richly ornate facade, its 90 -meter triforium, its multiple chapels, including one with a Saint James altarpiece, early 17C, its 18C organs, and its treasure. A baroque door was added in 1740, as well as a balcony open on the plain of Las Cañas. The Chapel of San Juan del Ramo was decorated in 1787 ; with scenes of the life of San Juan Bautista, as well as the paintings of The Announcement of the Angel to Zacarías (1786) and the Visitation (1787) Great decorative set of Rococó Spanish pictorial Outside under the west facade, César Borgia is buried. I was on my road warrior trails and just passing took a picture of the front, many years ago!

- Other things to see here, me think, are : The City/town hall of 1688, in the Plaza de los Fueros with its two towers, is an example of civil architecture. Renaissance or baroque style hotels abound. Its facade, decorated with the coat of arms of the Spanish monarchy, presents a baroque -style cover The former pilgrims’ hospice is a large building that has become a cultural center, in Calle Navarro Villoslada . This is none other than the old component of the 13-14C. Casa de Cultura on whose ground floor, of Gothic style, a second brick was added in baroque times. It is currently exhibition hall and auditorium. The Municipal School of Music is based in this building. By the Camino Francés of the pilgrimage of Saint-James-de-Compostela, the passage through this city comes from Torres del Rio. The next step is Logroño, the first city crossed in the province of the Rioja. The city of Viana had up to four hospitals for pilgrims in the 15C. A balcony supported building of the 17C, located in the Plaza del Coso
- Convent of San Francisco built in the third quarter of the 17C was Franciscan convent, until the confiscation of Mendizábal in which it went to municipal property. Subsequently, in 1858 it is occupied by the daughters of the charity of San Vicente de Paúl, creating school for girls and hospital. In the 1980s it became modern elderly residence, Ruins of San Pedro Cistercian Gothic of the 13C, with three naves, with an interesting apse , The facade is from the 18C, On February 1, 2009, a part of the rehabilitation of the ruins was inaugurated, with the reconstruction of the cellars and a room attached to the church, as well as the cleaning of stone and consolidation of the entire building. During 2010 some frescoes hidden from layers of paint that decorate the side nave that remains standing, of Gothic and neoclassical style have been brought to light. Ermita of the Virgen de las Cuevas: already cited in the pilgrim guides of the 12C, the current building was completely rebuilt in the 18C. The size of the Virgin that presides over the hermit, Ermita de San Martín: Romanesque of the 12C, can be dated in 1134. Only their walls were standing, but in May 2009 they began works for rehabilitation, ending in the spring of 2010 with the complete consolidation of the hermitage existing, and the construction of a new facade. The same year the brotherhood of San Martín was created.
A bit of history tell us that for centuries was Roman, Wisigothic, then, Muslim , Viana became in 1054 the last locality in Navarra along the pilgrimage path to Saint-James de-Compostela. Founded on February 1, 1219 by Sancho VII El Fuerte From the Prince of Viana was attached by oldest sons of the kings of Navarra, title that took the dauphins of France after Henri IV, king of France and of Navarre. During the 15C, as a result of the Civil War of Navarra, in 1451 when it fell into Castilian hands until 1466 that was again recovered for Navarra by the Count of Lerin. It was then that he received the title of very noble and very loyal from the Infanta Leonor de Navarra Traamara. In Viana César Borgia was buried, after dying at the hands of the men of the Count of Lerin on March 11, 1507, in a field in Viana, victim of an ambush. He was a bishop of Pamplona and Captain General of the Army of Navarra. Brothering of the king of Navarra Juan de Labrit, Borgia had come to recover Viana for Navarra. The king of Navarra ordered that the remains of Borgia were buried in a sumptuous grave in the main chapel of the Church of Santa María. In the First Carlist War (1833-1840) on September 4, 1834 in the Battle of Viana. In 1837 Gen Espartero fortified Logroño and began the conquest of Viana, Rioja Alavesa and Treviño to get to Navarra and Guipúzcoa where he signed the treaty handshake of Vergara. The Third Carlist War in 1872 the Carlist suitor, Carlos María de Borbón and Austria-Este, enters by Vera de Bidasoa, takes Estella and in Montejurra the Carlists beat the liberals. In Viana there was the exchange of prisoners the consequences of the Carlist wars in Viana were that the churches were destroyed, mainly that of San Pedro. The Spanish Civil War Viana had a Carlist mayor, and the majority of the population maintained sympathy with that movement. On July 19, 1936, the Carlists positioned themselves in Navarra on the side of the insurgent troops of General Mola, There was an Italian machine guns kept in Viana during the summer and autumn of 1937.
