The Church Santa Maria la Mayor of Arévalo !!!

We were back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car of course and took time to see some new towns with my sons and our dog Rex ! I rented a small house in a off the beaten path country town that was just perfect ! I like to continue the saga of our new road warrior experiences even if now with less in our family,This post is on my latest road warrior tour of wonderful sublime Spain. Therefore, let me tell you about the Church Santa Maria la Mayor of Arévalo !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Arévalo is in the province of Avila, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y Léon , in the kingdom of Spain, Only 73 km from our rental house in Velliza and 126 km from Madrid, We were going to Madrid with book reservations and had extra time in the morning so I took my road warrior mode on and came in off the A6 highway to see this wonderful town passed many times and finally in, This is a new town and find in my world map, Spain is huge of beautiful towns, working on it still…

The Church of Santa María la Mayor or Real located in the Plaza de la Villa,is crossed by the street of the same name. During its restoration there were polychrome remains of a pantocker that is believed to come from the original church. It has no worship. Built between the end of the 12C and early 13C, the church shows a Mudejar style and has been subject to various modifications over time. Inside are gothic paintings of the 14C and an artisany in the lower choir. The tower has an enclosed masonry structure, typical of Mudejar architecture.

The Church of Santa María la Mayor is located within a monumental enclosure of great interest formed by several churches, and an interesting set of popular architecture, all around a porticated square of great beauty . The church presides one of the vertices of this square. It is a unique, narrow and high nave church, in which the semicircular apse with three orders of blind arches, some remains of Mudejar artison and the slender Mudejar tower. Its tower, the highest in Arévalo, is perforated at its base with an arc through which a street passes. The upper part of that tower is neoclassical. The most remarkable thing inside are the paintings of the header and the artison of the lower choir. The oldest, gothic of the 14C, is located in the head, and it is a polychrome pantocker surrounded by mandorla, with the celestial Jerusalem on the feet, appeared in a recent restoration and that is considered from the original church.
