We were back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car of course and took time to see some new towns with my sons and our dog Rex ! I rented a small house in a off the beaten path country town that was just perfect ! I like to continue the saga of our new road warrior experiences even if now with less in our family,This post is on my latest road warrior tour of wonderful sublime Spain. Therefore, let me tell you about curiosities of Arévalo !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The town of Arévalo is in the province of Avila, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y Léon , in the kingdom of Spain, Only 73 km from our rental house in Velliza and 126 km from Madrid, We were going to Madrid with book reservations and had extra time in the morning so I took my road warrior mode on and came in off the A6 highway to see this wonderful town passed many times and finally in, This is a new town and find in my world map, Spain is huge of beautiful towns, working on it still…..
The Church of San Miguel is an intramurous church, built in an area whose defense was commissioned to the Montalvo family. Mention of the temple is made in 1250. It suffered profuse and deep reforms during the 16C. Its tower appears demolished and topped in brick. When it was built, it was higher than the Tower of the Church of Santa María la Mayor. The latter being the royal church, no other was allowed to overcome it in height. It is currently empty and without a cult being used only for concerts and cultural events. Inside there is a magnificent altarpiece of the archangel that gives its name to the Church and that was painted between 1507-1508.

The Church of San Nicolás de Bari is located at Calle de San Ignacio de Loyola, and is part of the Church-College complex that under the invocation of Santiago the Company of Jesus had in Arévalo until its expulsion from Spain in the year 1767. The church was built in 1579 as a temple of the Jesuit College. In 2008, it was included in the Red Patrimony List in danger due to its ruinous state, but left the list in 2017 after an intervention that repaired and stabilized the structure. The church has a Jesuit plant, baroque vaults and a dome cruise. The granite cover presents spare columns, a niche and a pediment with the shield of the Society of Jesus.

The Church of San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist), also known as San Juan de los Reyes, has a Mudejar apse, barely visible from the square, the body of a single nave covered with baroque vaults in the 18C and a three-level tower. It is a Romanesque church from the 12-13C. It is one of the eleven parishes documented in 1250. its Mudejar tower being converted into a wall cube through which the patrol path passed. At its base there is a Baroque chapel and above it, a vaulted room, the structure of the tower itself. On its head there are still double arches, remains of the Mudejar apse of the primitive factory adjacent to the palace with clear references of having been attached to it. On its southern façade the tower stands out, with two arches on one side pointed and framed in alfiz. Above it, years later, rises a stone balustrade of classic Escorial balls. On the southern façade there is a sculpture of Saint John that has already been mutilated. It has a single vaulted nave with Gothic cardine decorations; it is decorated inside by the vault and Baroque plasterwork. The main altarpiece from the Jesuit church is Baroque. In the center there is a carving of Saint John the Baptist and on top of it there is a painting of Saint Michael the Archangel. On the sides there are images of the Immaculate Conception. Inside the temple, the following stand out: a Gothic Christ, the magnificent Romanesque marble sculpture of San Zacarías, father of Saint Juan, from the middle of the 12C, with characteristics of the Romanesque-Borgon, and a small altarpiece dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, from the 16C.
