The Convento de San Esteban of Salamanca !!!

We were back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car of course and took time to see new areas and old repeat with some of them as introduction to my sons and our dog Rex ! I rented a small house in a off the beaten path country town that was just perfect ! I like to continue the saga of our new road warrior experiences even if now with less in our family, This post is on my latest road warrior tour of wonderful sublime Spain.  Therefore, let me tell you about the Convento de San Esteban of Salamanca !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Convento de San Esteban dominates the Plaza del Concilio de Trento, an original public space with two parts that was separated by a stone bridge, This place is loaded with history, since in this convent of the Dominicans that Columbus was staying when he visited Salamanca to expose before the geographers of the university how you could get to the Indies sailing to the West. The statue also highlights Francisco de Vitoria, a great figure of international law. The square became a starting point of line cars and today is one of the most emblematic corners of the old town of Salamanca, not only by the convent, a mixture of the Gothic and Renaissance styles, but for the views it offers, together with its beautiful garden.

The Convent of San Esteban is a Dominican convent of the 16C. The Plateresca facade, with its triumph arc form, is a real jewel of the Salamanca Renaissance. Awesome Baroque altarpiece of José Benito Churriguera. The cloister of the kings, Renaissance is also remarkable. Inside you find the Museum: located at the exit of the choir, in the high cloister. It shows valuable pieces of ivory, sculptures, liturgical clothing, goldsmiths, singers and canvases. It is in what was formerly the convent library. The convent’s monks, among the most enlightened teachers at the university in medieval times, introduced Christopher Columbus to Isabel (hence his statue in the nearby Plaza de Colón, back toward Calle de San Pablo). The complex was designed by one of the monks who lived here, Juan de Álava. The west facade, a thrilling plateresque masterwork in which sculpted figures and ornamentation are piled up to a height of more than 98 feet, is a gathering spot for tired tourists and picnicking locals, but the crown jewel of the structure is a glowing golden sandstone cloister with Gothic arcading punctuated by tall spindly columns adorned with classical motifs. The church, unified and uncluttered but also dark and severe, allows the one note of color provided by the ornate and gilded high altar of 1692. An awe-inspiring baroque masterpiece by José Churriguera, it deserves five minutes of just sitting and staring.
