The Basilica San Gregorio Ostiense of Sorlada !!!

I like to tell you again about my road warrior trails in my dear Spain. Again, found me some older paper pictures of litle of the beaten path Sorlada in Navarra, glad I did find it and will need to show it to the world, I like to do justice to the place and give you an introduction, Therefore, here is my take on the Basilica de San Gregorio Ostiense of Sorlada !!!  Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Sorlada is a village in the Comunidad Floral of Navarra, in the area of Merindad de Estella, and the greater comarca of Estella Oriental,in the valley of Berrueza , Real in country village and off the beaten path of my dear Spain! It is 64 km from Pamplona, 37 km from Logroño ,and 56 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz, Going from Logroño we took the A12 to come into the NA129 by Los Arcos and then Mues to the Basilica, just passing by to Pamplona and France.

The main thing or only thing to see here ,really is the Basilica of San Gregorio Ostiense, San Gregorio Ostiense, who was Cardinal and Bishop of Ostia (Italy), died in Logroño on May 9, 1044 where he was preaching sent by Pope John XVIII. After his death, the legend tell us that his body was miraculously transported by a donkey even in the Alto de Piñalba, in the term of Sorlada, Navarra village located on the border with Álava and La Rioja, where it should be buried and where the origins of the sanctuary should dedicate a church, There was until the 11C, a hermitage dedicated to San Salvador. Already in the 13C seems like a new church was built of which some small remains are still preserved in the wall of the Gospel , and it is between 1694 and 1771, when current church is built in the styles of the moment, the Baroque and the Rococó, This sanctuary was between the 16C and 18C one of the most active in Spain thanks to the protection that the Holy one deployed on the fields and crops, in an eminently rural society. There were numerous devotees from all over Spain who sent emissaries to Sorlada to collect the holy water with which to water the fields and free them from pests. And the requests were also large for the Ark with the relics of the Saint, as well as its reliquary bust, A great and monumental tower toured, more than what a church located in such a location required. Was built around 1718, it is also an octagonal body, in contrast to the two other rectangular. In each of the three bodies one of the classic, Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders is used, respectively, from the bottom up. In 2008 was considered by popular vote one of the 10 wonders of Navarra.
