Let me take you to the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V of Madrid !! Sit back and enjoy with me the next several posts ; and hope you enjoy it as I.

The city of Madrid is the capital of the kingdom of Spain, and located in the Comunidad de Madrid region From my latest escapes it is 211 km from Valladolid City , 198 km from our rental house in Velliza, 183 km from Tordesillas, 172 km from Rueda, 159 km from Medina del Campo, 199 km from Simancas, We made long walks all over the City , and took the metro when necessary, three times. I love to tell you of our latest escape to the wonderful City, for the memories of always and return, eventually. This one I passed several times over the years but believe it is my first picture of it !!!
The Plaza del Emperador Carlos V is a roundabout where the Paseo del Prado, calle de Atocha, Calle de Santa Isabel , Glorieta de Atocha, the Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza, the Paseo de la Cabeza ,Calle de Las Delicias, Calle Méndez Álvaro , the Paseo de la Infanta Isabel and Avenida Ciudad de Barcelona comes together in a maze of street which I passed by as a challenge ! . Until 1941 it was name of Plaza de Atocha or Glorieta de Atocha, names for which it remains known by the locals. This was to name the Mediodia or Estacion de Atocha, the main railway station in Madrid. It owes its name to the Puerta de Atocha gate knocked down in 1850 , In 1941 the current name was given to the square or Plaza del Emperador Carlos V to avoid duplicity or confusion with the Atocha names. Under the square is the Estacion del Arte of line 1 of the metro of Madrid.
Originally located at the Glorieta de Atocha , this fountain was very popular among those travelling to Madrid, as it was one of the first monuments they saw when they left the train station. In 1987, as part of the works to renovate the Glorieta de Carlos V, which to create more confusion is also the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V ( square of the emperor Charles V, king of Spain Charles III ),the decision was made to place a reproduction of the Fuente de la Alcachofa in the center of the roundabout. The original source was projected in 1776 and sculpted between 1781 and 1782, for the Salon del Prado (old palace of Retiro see post), following the guidelines of king Carlos III to beautify and urbanize the northeastern area of Madrid. In its origin it was installed in front of the missing Puerta de Atocha gate. After its restoration in 1847, it moved to the Retiro park, where it continues to be placed in the Plaza de la Republica de Honduras, next to the southern corner of the Estanque or large pond. A bronze replica has been located since 1987 in the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, popularly known as Glorieta de Atocha, The monument features some of the most characteristic baroque motifs, including marine deities, plants and water, as an indispensable element for life. At the top of the fountain an artichoke can be seen, a plant much appreciated for its medicinal properties and culinary use. Flanking a round base, a triton and a nereid are holding up the city’s coat of arms.
