And a bit more from my books. It belonged to a now-vanished Discalced Carmelite convent dedicated to Saint Hermenegild, which occupied the plots on Calle de Alcalá where the former Apollo Theater and later the Bank of Vizcaya were built. There was an initial 17C church that was demolished when the current one, located parallel to the present church, was completed. When the project to open the Gran Vía was approved, the façade had to be remodeled, raising it on steps due to the difference in ground level and increasing the height of the side walls. The adjacent building known as the Casa del Párroco or the Parish Priest’s House was then constructed, combining the façades of both. Above the main entrance, we can see the Carmelite cross, and in a niche, an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel made by Robert Michel in 1750. Pedro de Ribera designed the façade in the Baroque style. In 1912, the façade was remodeled by the architect Juan Moya, extending it on both sides to align with the adjacent building, in anticipation of the opening of the Gran Vía. The interior of the church is rich in works of art. The Chapel of Saint Teresa stands out for its decoration. Also noteworthy are a crucified Christ, an excellent sculpture by Alonso de Mena, and a Saint Joseph by Luis Salvador Carmona.
