The City of Medina del Campo is located in the province of Valladolid and the autonomous community of Castilla y Léon in the kingdom of Spain, It is 54 km from Valladolid City , 42 km from our rental house in Velliza, and 160 km from Madrid, This was a must to visit and glad we did, we even had a glass of wine inside lol!
The Reales Carnicerías : these are the old market or Mercado de Abastos. They are located on the left bank of Zapardiel river, and were built under the Catholic kings in 1500, in the Renaissance style. Later, under the reign of Felipe II of Spain, they were used for the meat trade. It is the only historical building of this type, worldwide, which retains its original market function.
It is located outside the old medieval village, in the extension Bajomedieval and Renaissance, promoted by its famous fairs, on the banks of the Zapardiel River, its current structure derives from plans prepared by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, in 1562. Historical data appears in the long registration of the southwest facade, which the lords did of Medina, reigning Felipe II, and being Corregidor Pedro de Vivero.
Externally, the composition of the facades is closely related to the internal organization of the plant. All of them have brick arches, on limestone stalls pillars, today blinded. The cornice, in successively blowning, picks up a dog tooth game, clearly influenced by Mudéjar. The three stone covers, located two of them in the center of the market, and a third on the southwest facade, also in a centered position, have an analogous composition, with columns or pilasters, boxing an arc, on whose sides the shields look of the town; In the upper part, a pediment with the real shield.
Internally the building, of rectangular plant and a four -waters inclined cover, is divided into three nerfs, as a lonja, by arcity of columns, which serve from support to the brick wall, lightened by means of a succession of reduced arc holes, made in brick, which served as ventilation between the nerfs.
Good post for a bit of history on the city of Medina del Campo! “Medina”, which means “city” in Arabic, was founded on the hill called La Mota in the 11C, in the very place where the castle is, a wall still remains there. Today, the hill is a suburban district, but in the Middle Ages, it was the city center. In addition, this hill has archaeological vestiges such as a fortress, a medieval village and a Celtic colony dated from the 4C BC (Iron Age).
