We are back to my dear Spain again !! love it !! We came by car of course and took time to see new areas and old repeat with some of them as introduction to my sons and our dog Rex ! I came into Medina del Campo after several years and it was sublime ! I like to continue my road warrior stories this time in Medina del Campo. Therefore, here is my take on the Church of Santiago El Real of Medina del Campo !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The City of Medina del Campo is located in the province of Valladolid and the autonomous community of Castilla y Léon in the kingdom of Spain, It is 54 km from Valladolid City , 42 km from our rental house in Velliza, and 160 km from Madrid. This is an interesting church, sadly when in town; it was closed, we will be back , eventually.
The Parish Church of Santiago El Real is the former temple of the novitiate of the Saints Pedro and Paul of the Company of Jesus, a very early Jesuit Foundation, of 1551. And it is that the new order immediately considered this town as a prosperous enclave in which to settle, something that was possible thanks to the assignment of some houses by Don Rodrigo de Dueñas, and that as soon were small for pastoral work, it was that same merchant who expressly bought to deliver them, some land located in front of the Plaza Santiago.

As for the works to erect a school, they were financed thanks to the testamentary provisions of the rich merchant Don Pedro Cuadrado and his wife, Mrs. Francisca Manjón, who converted the main altar of the new temple into its funeral chapel. Brick walls. A nerf with chapels between buttresses and communicating with each other. The arches are half a point and the vaults of starry crossing, as well as in the sacristy. High choir at the foot. Tower, at the foot of two bodies and brick. The cover, at the foot, is half a point. Although in 1665 the school suffered a devastating fire that affected part of the church, was quickly rebuilt, with works finished in the following decade. After the decree of Carlos III of expulsion, the company of Jesus of the Spanish Crown in 1767, the Jesuit school-novicado was closed, its library transferred to the dependencies of the Collegiate Church of San Antolín (see post) ,and the building became a gunpowder factory, devastated by a fire a short time later.
The only thing that was preserved was the Church Parish of Santiago El Real, one of the oldest in Medina del Campo, already mentioned in the relationship of 1177 parishes, which was next to the door of its name of the third enclosure of walls from the city, just in front of the Jesuits, moving to this new location in 1770. The tower is also at the foot and dates from the end of the 18C, when it was already a parish, built replacing the primitive place. It presents three bodies, the first with a single vain auctioned half -point, the second with small rectangular openings and the third, the body of bells, with double half -point arch windows. The Church would begin to rise in 1557 and was formed as a model that the Jesuit churches will later follow, adjusted to the guidelines of what was being debated in Trento, without Nartex, so that the faithful was projected directly to the church’s body , a single nerf, in this case of four sections, so that the congregation was gathered and concentrated before the main altar, three side chapels between buttres with transcepts of little development and head of plain testtero. It also has a high chorus to the feet.
In the 2000s it has undergone an integral restoration accompanied by an archaeological study of the destroyed attached school.
