The City of Valladolid is in the province of Valladolid, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y Léon, only 202 km from from Madrid. This is a very popular church for tourists as locals but it was just up the road from our walking warrior tour so we saw it….

The Conventual Church of San Pablo is one of the most representative buildings in the city of Valladolid ,located in the Plaza de San Pablo, It was built between 1445 and 1616 and belongs to the Order of the Dominicans. In this church the kings Felipe IV and Felipe II were baptized and was visited by Napoleon.

Since 1260, at the initiative of the Queen Violante de Aragón, wife of Alfonso El Sabio, the residences of Franciscans and Dominicans are organized although the creation of the Order of San Pablo first hermit would have been carried out in Hungary in 1250 at the initiative of the Blessed Eusebio of Strigonia, The Convent of San Pablo in Valladolid was founded in 1276 by Violante de Aragón, in honor of this hermit order in formation. She was the daughter of the queen of Hungary, who had arrived in Iberian lands to consummate her marriage to Jaime I of Aragon. Between 1445 and 1468 new construction replaced another mendicant church, covered with wooden roof. The header, the transept, and the nerf with a wooden cover was concluded. In 1601,  In the transfer of the capital of the empire to Valladolid, the Duke of Lerma, valid for king Felipe III, became its employer; He paid for the reform of its main façade and gave the convent numerous works of art, including the Annunciation, of Fra Angelico, today in the Prado Museum.

Between 1613 and 1616, reforms were made in herreriano style of some chapels of the ship and the choir the execution of the tribune of the employers, from which the Dukes heard Mass, and the Doric Gate of the Sacristy. In the 19C with the French invasion, the Napoleonic troops desecrated the church and the convent causing serious damage.(of course).

The Church San Pablo is of the type of usual in the time of the Catholic Monarchs, following the style that develops in Castile during its reign; The Elizabethan Gothic, as corresponds to the late Gothic. The facade of the church and its work was completed around 1500. In the atrium of the facade the crossing were appropriated from the Church of Santiago (see post) ,and the pillars was placed, topped with trenent lions by the Duke of Lerma In 1601. The facade, partially responds to the Elizabethan Gothic style on a background of scales there is a shield of the Catholic Monarchs, which crowns the entire cover.

In the main chapel, Francisco de Sandoval y Rojas, first Duke of Lerma, along with his wife, are buried,  although the funeral sculptures, made in bronze, are part of the collection of the National Sculpture Museum (see post). It presents two absidal chapels; in which there is an image of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and a recumbent Christ, of Tabernacle type in the presbytery, a Christ on the cross dated in the 17C, and four Dominican saints. On the transept  are two paintings the vocation of San Pedro and the conversion of St. Paul, from the missing main altarpiece. In the sacristy there is a crucifix, larger than that located in the presbytery.
