One of the great architectural and historical cities of my Spain. I have several posts on it but found me ,again, several pictures that need to be in my blog, Of course, this is Alcalà de Henares in the Comunidad de Madrid, Always brings me back memories. Let me tell you about the Arco San Bernardo of Alcalà de Henares !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

In the mid -15C, the uncontrolled development of extramurous settlements made the construction of a second walled enclosure that extended its canvases to the east and the south, which forced the varying the site of some of the gates/doors and building with new ones. This second enclosure would be practically destroyed during the 19C, currently retaining only the canvas that surrounds the Archbishop’s palace, the Puerta de Madrid, the Puerta de Burgos and the Arco de San Bernardo. The Puerta de Burgos was the oldest of the access of the medieval wall that has remained standing. This puerta/door was closed in the 17C by being integrated in the walls of the Convent of San Bernardo (see post). For this reason it was necessary to build a new access, the Arco de San Bernardo, with a simple brick invoice, which still fulfills that function of that of Burgos, which today occupies the enclosure of the Monastery of San Bernardo, also called Bernardas. The works for the building of the convent were carried out between the 1617 and 1618 , and you see San Bernardo, protected by in a niche. This arch communicates the exit of the old town by the Plaza de las Bernardas with the Via Complutense ,and the O’Donell Park.
