The heritage of Alcalà de Henares ,part III !!!

One of the great architectural and historical cities of my Spain. I have several posts on it but found me ,again, several pictures that need to be in my blog, Of course, this is Alcalà de Henares in the Comunidad de Madrid.  Always brings me back memories. Let me tell you a bit the heritage of Alcalà de Henares ,part III !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Church of Santa María la Mayor is located on Calle Libreros ,this church, started in 1567, interrupted its construction until 1602-1620, when thanks to donations from the Mendoza family it was terminated, in the absence of the facade. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain in 1767, it became the Paraninfo of the University of Alcalá, where the Dr. of Alcalá was examined. Subsequently, it was part of the various military quarters that used their facilities. After the Spanish Civil War, and having destroyed in 1936 the Church of Santa María la Mayor (see post) located in the Plaza de Cervantes, the parish of Santa María relocated its headquarters in the chapel of the old Jesuit College. The rest of the Maximum College of the Society of Jesus is the headquarters of the current Law Faculty of the University of Alcalá, on Calle Libreros, From that primitive parish attests the isolated bell tower that can be seen at one end of the Plaza de Cervantes.

The Church of Saint Mary la Mayor or Iglesia Santa María la Mayor is the denomination that has had two buildings throughout history in the city of Alcalá de HenaresOf the old church located south of the Plaza de Cervantes, in front of the city/town hall, there is only the design of its plant marked on the ground and two parts that have been restored: the tower and a chapel. This, called the Capilla del Oidor or Chapel of the Listener, of Mudejar decoration, contains a baptismal font specially celebrated for being in which Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quijote writer author) was baptized.

Right around it is Calle Mayor and we went looking frantically for the House Museum Cervantes at no. 48 , (see post) opened to the public since 1956. You come in for free!!! and right into the courtyard or patio.  You take the walk tour into the surgery room, from his father’s trade; then the dining room, kitchen, ladies’ drawing room, a puppet show of the novel Don Quijote, his bedroom, bathroom private parlour, children room, and exhibition hall.
