The wonderful corners of the Retiro park of Madrid !!!

If you have followed my blog, you know my attachment to Madrid, and my history there so do not need to repeat me think. If you have not and new to my blog just go to search type Retiro and/or Madrid and see the many posts on it. From Madrid to heaven and a hole in the sky to look down on it everyday. The focus here is something folks hidden somewhat inside the wonderfully beautiful Parque del Buen Retiro or simply Retiro park in my dear Madrid. The park is very near where I used to lived and walk by it everytime in the city. This is my park, Parque del Buen Retiro I always look forward to be back, eventually, For now let me tell you about the wonderful corners of the Retiro park of Madrid !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Many entrances to the park my old haunts was by Puerta de Alcalà at the Plaza de la Independencia, where I lived not far, but lately coming by the Plaza Niño Jésus ( square of the Child Jesus). The Paseo del Duque Fernàn Nunez is name after the first Duke who had a castle nearby there ,and gave the land for the the park was turn into a Royal grounds and finally made available to the public in 1868.  Right on this paseo or street you will see the Fuente del Angel Caido (see post). The Puerta del Niño Jésus, is located on the square of the same name where you entered the Paseo de del Duque Fernàn Nunez.

And the Parterre (main garden walk area), entrance by the Gate or puerta de Felipe IV, with an axis from the Casón del Buen Retiro  (see post) to the Fuente de la Alcachofa , and the Estanque or pond.   A magical walk with beauty of top gardeners keeper all around you. here is an impressive tree such as the Ahuehuete also known as Mexican cypress ,planted in 1630, the oldest tree in the park. It is located in the Parterre section where you can see it going in by the calle Alfonso XII. the tree measures 25 meters and looks like a candelabra as from its base many branches very thick comes out.

You will see the Bosque del Recuerdo ,done in 2005  as a garden inside the park to remembered the victims of the terrorist attack of March 11 2004 in Madrid. The Bosque del Recuerdo or forest of memory, previously known as the Bosque de los Ausentes or forest of the absent, is a monument built as a tribute to the 191 victims of the terrorist attacks of March 11, 2004 in Madrid and the agent of the Special Forces dead when seven authors of the attacks committed suicide with bombs on April 3, 2004 in Leganés. The  forest is in La Chopera area of Retiro, near the Atocha train station, and consists of 118 areas with 192 trees (22 olive trees and 170 cypresses), one for each murdered. It is a wonderful garden indeed and worth the detour in the park to see it.
