The college Maius is part of a large complex of buildings belonging to the Jagiellonian University ; one of the most prestigious and second oldest in Central Europe. It was founded in 1364 by the Polish king Casimir the Great. A medieval university building comprising a courtyard and arcaded cloisters, as well as a museum tracing its history. Among his most famous students: Copernicus, John III Sobieski, Ivo Andric (Nobel Prize for Literature), and Karol Wojtila (aka Pope John Paul II), The library, the Common Chamber of professors, the treasury and the theologians’ reading room (today’s Auditorium) were located on the first floor (2nd US) . Professors’ apartments, or residences, were located on the ground floor (1st US), on the first (2nd) and second (3rd) floors, By 1964, a comprehensive renovation, combined with the removal of the neo-Gothic robe, the College Maius regained its original appearance from before 1840. At that time, it was also designated as the seat of the Jagiellonian University Museum, which housed former university collections of works of art and souvenirs as well as a rich collection of scientific instruments.
