The streets of Quimper !!!

One of my favorite cities in my lovely region of Bretagne. Of course, I have written several posts on it in my blog, but fell that more is needed, On my last visit this week gathered additional pictures for my blog, These are the streets of Quimper, and I hope you enjoy them as I.

The always a must Rue Kéreon right off the Place St Corentin and into old Quimper full of restos, shops, It has always been Quimper’s busiest shopping street. It owes its name to the guild of shoemakers and bootmakers who worked and sold leather. As a result, its charm of yesteryear has been partly preserved. Today the old dwellings are classified, protected and restored. A policy of encouraging the renovation of the facades makes it possible to rediscover the polychromy of the timber framings and to appreciate these witnesses of History.

A charming little square lined with half-timbered houses and café terraces, Place Terre-au-Duc owes its name to its location. In the Middle Ages, it was in this part of the city belonging to the Duke of Cornwall that the secular center of the city was organized, as opposed to the episcopal city. It is in this part of the city that the court, the prison and the market of the Duke of Cornouaille were located. See houses at 2 and 19 Place Terre-au-Duc 16C.

Under the Old Regime (as monarchy is known today), the city ramparts bordered the river on the site of the current Quai du Steïr. We can still get a fairly precise idea of this route by taking as alignment the remains of the fortification of the rue du Pichery.

The half-timbered house is more commonly called a house when it is on several levels. This construction technique existed from the High Middle Ages until the 19C. The wood, the beams and the frame are the main structure of the house. The plaster on the facade only served to give it a luxurious and modern appearance. These houses were large and family with a very large fireplace to heat the whole. The term “colombage” can be translated as “columns”. The rue Kéréon, or the rue Saint Mathieu offer us beautiful examples, See houses at 4, 7 and 8 Rue Saint-Mathieu from the 16C and 17C,same street as the Church Saint Mathieu, (see posts).

The Halles St François opened in 1847.  on the site of the former Saint-François convent, this is the most famous market, and only covered market located in the heart of Quimper. The Halles Saint-François sadly, will be transferred 230 meters from their current site, to La Glacière. The new halles at La Glacière will be 1,500 m2. With 30 stalls on the ground floor with an area of 12 to 15 m2. For the record, the current building has a little more (34) but some are vacant. Always on the ground floor, there is a catering area planned ,Not before 2024 or maybe the end of 2025 to be finish, Indeed, the future halles will be built in place of 49 garages, which run along rue de la Providence. The City has already acquired 20. For the remaining 29, it intends to go through a declaration of public utility in order to speed up transactions with recalcitrant owners. But such a procedure can take several months or even years. It is a question of preserving the old framework, restoring it and transforming the square into a covered public space on the old spot, The official webpage: http://halles-cornouaille.com/halles-de-cornouaille/quimper/

Again, more on the Church Saint Mathieu of Quimper !!

The construction of the Saint-Mathieu Church dates from the middle of the 19C, replacing a 15C church whose foundations seem to have been preserved and which had itself replaced a 12C Romanesque church. It is in the form of a Latin cross with 5 nerfs, the choir has two side chapels opening onto the transept.

The interior of the Saint Mathieu Church houses a 17C master window from the previous church, a pulpit from 1897, a marble high altar with the statues of Sainte-Anne, Sainte-Marguerite, Saint-Joseph, Saint-Mathieu , St. Francis de Sales and St. Vincent de Paul.

In its stained glass windows you can see represented the Passion in ten scenes: Agony in the garden, Kiss of Judas, Appearance before Caiaphas, Flagellation, Crowning with thorns, Condemnation by Pilate, Carrying of the cross, Crucifixion, Entombment, Resurrection, all arranged in a large window. with five subdivisions, of which the Crucifixion alone occupies three over two-thirds of the height. A canopy decorated in Renaissance style dominates each scene. The Agony and the Kiss of Judas are modern The central panel of the Crucifixion has also been completely redone, in imitation of that of Tourc’h, which is identical in the other parts to that of Saint-Mathieu, which authorizes to consider the latter as currently conforming to its primitive state. In the upper bellows of the tympanum, the Eternal Father, in tiara and cope, blesses with his right hand and, with his left hand, supports the globe of the world. Below, the other bellows show instruments of the Passion and coats of arms.

For the general ordinance, the stained glass window of Saint-Mathieu dated 1539, and which recounts the whole life of the Savior since the entry into Jerusalem. Soldiers, at the foot of the cross, are arguing; knife in hand, and tear to shreds the garments of the Crucified. In Saint-Mathieu, the presence of canopies also gives more harmony and regularity to the composition. The Savior attracts more attention; he really comes across as the essential character. All in all, and despite the too many damages it has undergone, the stained glass window of Saint-Mathieu retains all its value.
