More of the Côte Sauvage of Quiberon !!!

I like to tell you more of one of my favorite spots in my beautiful Morbihan is the Presqu’île de Quiberon or  peninsula of Quiberon. What better way to see its natural beauty is to see the wild coast or Côte Sauvage! I have written on it but found me more pictures in my vault that need to share it with the world. The Côte Sauvage is just about 40 minutes by car south from my house; and we love it. Hope you enjoy this latest addition to my blog and the Côte Sauvage !!!

All you do is take your car off the voie express or expressway N165 , direction Lorient/Brest ,and get off at the exit Quiberon/Carnac etc on the road D768, follow signs for Quiberon , and when you reach the port town of Portivy (see post) turn right into the Côte Sauvage; have a great wild coast ride along the Atlantic ocean!  The road here is number D186A and changes with names but no matter you just keep going slowly, of course in Summer is a bit crowded but plenty of parking for free along the road to enjoy the sights. The D186A is also, call the Route Cotiére or coastal road.

The Côte Sauvage or wild coast occupies the western side of the peninsula of Quiberon, in the towns of Quiberon and Saint-Pierre-Quiberon (see post). It extends roughly 8 km between the tip of Percho to the north and the Turpault castle (see post) to the south The cliffs of the Côte Sauvage, higher in their northern part (town of Saint-Pierre-Quiberon), are covered with ancient dune perched; the height of the cliffs gradually lowers towards the southern end of the peninsula (town of Quiberon), giving way to short lawns or moors.

The Côte Sauvage or wild coast is a cliffs hanging zigzagging road with beautiful views of the Atlantic ocean below you and passing by what was the famous WWII Atlantic Wall that the Nazis tried to hold on the possible invasions which as you know was not enough thanks God.

Given its very steep relief, its dangerousness and its exposure to the prevailing winds , the Côte Sauvage has remained in its natural state, except for occupations dating from the Prehistory (Port-Blanc dolmens, barred spur of Pointe de Beg in Aud), a few occasional uses (the former customs house, now in ruins, at Pointe du Percho; former military ground at Kergroix) and the converted fishpond at the beginning of the 20C to store shellfish (a café-restaurant Le Vigier now occupies the site) in Beg ar Goalennec.

The Chapelle Saint-Quirin of Brech !!!

This was mix in with other monuments and really should have a post of its own. This is the first town I lived when came to the beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of the lovely Bretagne in 2011. It is a town divided into many smaller villages or lieu-dit and the main town or bourg is where the church is, even thus I lived in Corn er Hoët (Breton, French would be Orée du Bois meaning edge of the woods). It really packs a lot of monuments with nice architecture and history for a small town, I was lucky to lived in it briefly. Therefore, let me tell you a bit more on the Chapelle Saint Quirin of Brech. Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Chapelle Saint-Quirin is on the D768 la chaumiere road. Dated from the 17C, the Saint Quirin Chapel contains what is considered to be the most beautiful classical altarpiece in the Morbihan. Built in tufa and Maine marble, this masterpiece is attributed to the Laval masters. The chapel is placed under the patronage of Saint Quirin who is said to be a martyred bishop. It belongs to the lordship of Kerivallan belonging to this family from 1628 to the French revolution.  In 1675 the manoir was enlarged .The site is a typical Breton sanctuary and a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Sainte-Anne d’Auray. Formerly, the chapel and in particular its fountain were very popular. A rare document known as the “notebook of miracles of Saint Quirin” attests to the popularity of the sanctuary. In this register, the pilgrims recorded the fulfillment of their vows, mainly healings.

The Chapelle Saint Quirin was built in 1676 and features classic rural architecture The saint to whom this chapel is dedicated is uncertain The nearby Saint-Quirin devotional fountain dates from the 17C but was restored in 1890; the granite statue of Saint Quirin was placed next to it in 1998 The Saint-Quirin fountain with its round basin used for ablutions of the sick and two statues of the Virgin and Saint-Quirin in its niche. Brittany is dotted with healing or miraculous fountains. The Saint-Quirin fountain is famous for curing ailments: the “Book of Miracles” of Saint-Quirin attests to this. The chapel is open year-round, every day from 11h to 17h30.
