Again updating this memorable post of our walks in Rome, Indeed it is always refreshing to walk any city and those you visit seems to give oneself a positive feeling on life and the bounties of our Earth.Hope you enjoy this post on the Streets of Rome !!!
I have come to Rome several times over the years from France and if you have read my blog, one of my pastimes is to get lost on the city streets on foot. Above ground you see more and its better for you. Well Rome was no difference whether on business or with the family vacation I walk. The family always remarks that I walk and don’t even look back lol! Well I am looking at the architecture as I go by always fascinating if I could only been an architect lol! (well its runs in the family we have them!).
The Campo de’ Fiori name comes from the fact that in this very place, in the Middle Ages, there was a vast meadow dominated by the fortress of the powerful Orsini family. This very busy square is located between Piazza Navona and Palazzo Farnese. The Campo de’ Fiori once extended to the land in front of Pompey’s Theatre. In the center of Campo de’ Fiori is the statue of Giordano Bruno, which recalls that this Dominican monk was burned alive there on February 17, 1600. Every day of the week except Sunday there is a fruit and vegetable market; there are also fishmongers there. Great lively place indeed, Some of the famous buildings around it are the Farnese Palace, Spada Palace, seat of the Council of State, Palace of the Mont-de-Piété, where one could obtain a loan in pledge of personal goods, the Piccola Farnesina, where one finds the collection of sculptures of Giovanni Barracco. Near the Mont de Piété are the underground passages of the Church of San Paolo alla Regola, where the remains of a Roman house have been discovered.
The Via dei Fori Imperiali is a street that leads in a straight line from Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum. Of recent design, it was inaugurated on April 9, 1932. In the Middle Ages, the area was occupied by many houses, churches and monasteries. The big ribbon and a parade of soldiers maimed in the Great War (WWI) was organized as the ideal modern patriotic gathering in memory of the ancient power. After WWII, the artery took its present name and on June 2 a parade was organized to celebrate the Italian Republic Day.
The Via Frattina is one of the best-known streets in the historic center of Rome. It begins at the foot of the staircase of the Trinité des Monts,or mount trinity, and is one of the most famous shopping streets in Rome. The famous trident, which connects via del Corso to Piazza Mignanelli, it owes its name to the first owner of the Palazzo di Propaganda Fide, Bartolomeo Ferratino , The Via Frattina follows the path of a road from Roman times used by the inhabitants of the villas of the Pincio, to go towards the center of the city. Paved in the 16C, it was also at this time that the area was subdivided and residences were built. At the end of the street stands the palace of the Spanish Embassy. In the 1960s, along with via dei Condotti and via Borgognona, via Frattina became one of the main Roman shopping streets, with a more marked vocation towards sewing, silverware and furniture.
The Piazza Barberini is located on the Quirinal hill, straddling the rioni of Trevi and Colonna. Created in the 16C, most of the buildings in the square have been rebuilt since that time. Piazza Barberini takes its name from Palazzo Barberini which is located on its south side built during the first half of the 17C for Cardinal Francesco Barberini, In the center of the square stands a famous sculpture by Bernini entitled the Triton Fountain (Fontana del Tritone) dating from 1642-1643 which was commissioned from the artist by Pope Urban VIII, a member of the Barberini family. At the corner of Via Veneto is another Bernini sculpture, the Fountain of the Bees (Fontana delle Api). The bee being the emblem of the Barberini. Until the 18C, the square was used for the display of corpses for their identification.
