A road warrior mini tour of the Landes !!

I was looking at my vault and could not find a picture but I know I rode by here in my road warrior mode several times in the past. I wanted to bring to life some of my memories with the help of my travel library , diaries, can tell you a bit on the Landes in my black and white series, no pictures. Hope you enjoy it as I.

Entre Deux Mers or between two seas in the north, you have the Dordogne river, and in the south you have the Garonne river, coiled between their arms the Entre Deux Mers, A wonderful area with good price/quality wines of Bordeaux. The particularity of the AOC Entre Deux Mers , the wines must be blended wines, with therefore, two white grape varieties used as minimum,Their distribution depends on the will of each winegrower … from these different combinations will arise diversity. The grapes used are the Sauvignon, that makes it possible to obtain more lively wines, with powerful aromas and brings to the nose very fresh scents of citrus fruits, grapefruit, passion fruit, underlined by those of wild plants such as acadia flower, broom, boxwood etc, Muscadelle , floral and fruity, it contributes to the complexity of the wines of the Appellation. Sémillon  offers notes of spring flowers, white and yellow fruits, pears, white peaches, as well as suppleness and roundness in the mouth. Young, it is subtly discreet to better reveal itself and express all its aromas as it ages. Sauvignon Gris  can also be used in the blend, giving aromas of exotic fruits and fatness to the wine. The Entre Deux Mers area tourist office : https://www.entredeuxmers.com/

The very nice Saint Sever ! We rode and then walk several years back, The town is on a promontory above the Adour river at the crossroads of the Landes, a strategic city in the Middle Ages, an important stage on the paths of Saint James (Santiago de Compostela), The walk begins around the Place du Tour du Sol lined with monastic buildings and 18C mansions. , The same on the aristocratic facades of the place de Verdun and the rue du Général Lamarque with pilasters Ionic capitals volute of wrought iron friezes and modillions, The most beautiful residence almost a castle is at no 11, the monogram M.L. on the gate recalls that it was built in 1810 by General and Count Maximien Lamarque, soldier of Bonaparte, Republican Deputy of the Landes and child of the country, The neighboring the Convent of the Jacobins in pink brick built in the 17C in the Languedoc Roman style on the ruins of a first monastery partly destroyed by the Huguenots (protestants), a vestige of the 13C the single-aisled church has an impressive frame in broken barrel, first floor the museum lapidary collection of Gallo Roman remains from the town of Augreilh and a slide show showing the Apocalypse of Saint Sever manuscript of the 11C, By the rue du Général Durrieu beautiful private mansions in particular the n° 2 and imposing buildings of a former convent become the City/town hall, By the rue du Touron in front of the church which leads you to the picturesque Porte de Poussoles gate, see vestige of the medieval enclosure of the 14C, You still have to cross the avenue du Général de Gaulle road that connects Mont-de Marsan to Orthez, the hill of Morlanne the original site of the city occupied from the 1C BC by a Roman oppidum , The panorama on the Adour valley justifies the site visit, It keeps the imprente of two castle mounds only vestiges of a fortified castle which adjoin the arenas and the statue of General Lamarque, webpage : https://www.saint-sever.fr/Histoire-et-Patrimoine/Les-monuments

From Saint Sever go to Pimbo old bastide of the Landes, since it is whispered that Charlemagne returning from Spain would be at the origin of the foundation of an old Benedictine monastery Sainte Marie de Pendulo remodeled in 11C and 12C , The collegiate church dedicated to Saint Barthélemy much suffered from the abuses of the Huguenots of Montgomery in 1569, Today remains attractive with its apse in the bottom of the oven and its two apsidioles which are strictly Cistercian, Its wall bell tower pierced by two openings recalls fortifications against the madness of men, The portal is decorated with characters depicting the seven deadly sins, Inside a great sobriety, Pimbo is a stage on the way to Saint Jmes, webpage : https://www.landes-chalosse.com/en/for-lovers-of-history-and-heritage/bastide-de-pimbo-3255180

In Sorde, on the site of a Gallo Roman town, the first Benedictine church was built in the 10C, destroyed during the war of religions, the monastic building was rebuilt by the congregation of Saint Mau in the 17C, Only the church keeps memories of the Romanesque period, Inside the choir is paved with a superb 11C mosaic representing, among other things, felines, Also on the way to Saint James, In front of it, an island all planted with kiwis as Sorde is one of the first centers of production in France, webpage : https://www.abbaye-sorde.fr/en/discover-the-abbey/over-1000-years-of-history.html

To the west crosses Arthous, founded 12C by the order of Premonstratensians, the Abbey of Arthous which remains their property until the French revolution, it now houses the departmental heritage center of the Landes with an interactive museum on the country d’Orthe ,a research center ,and a place of accommodation for pilgrims, The abbey built in 1167 with the church hesitates between the Romanesque and a Gothic styles, it now hosts exhibitions, webpage : https://www.landes-holidays.com/patrimoine-culturel/abbaye-darthous-pcuaqu04001qbhra/

Between Vert and Labrit on the road D57, you will pass by the site of the former castle of Albret, the ancestors of Henri IV in wood and earth, only the memory and the vestiges of the feudal motte of the 12C remain. Of course, I had to stop by and sadly cannot find pictures yikes ! You need to see the Alfred Longuefosse arena in Pouillon to understand the Course Landaise! The cow or the Landaise in reality ,has been Iberian since the end of the 19C its life is more pleasant since there are no banderillas or killings, The principle of the Course Landaise race consists of challenging the cow and dodging a feint or a jump by a gap, A real sport with around 400 races per year, a ranking of the best jumpers and spreaders, a French championship and notations which judge the quality of the tricks and the difficulties presented by the animal , The races are from March to October, Bullfights and course Landaise races have a common ancestor, the bullfighting games present in the Landes of the Middle Ages and whose origin dates back to ancient Crete, In 1853 the first Spanish bullfight took place in Saint Esprit , half a century later, the landaise race separates from Spanish bullfighting to follow its own rules, govern by a national federation founded in 1953.

A bit to understand it better, you have the Cordier, he holds the cow in its tracks thanks to a rope attached to the most dangerous horn, The Coursiére cow engaged in a race there are ten per race, the Cuadrilla, team of licenses with the federation, each has six or seven spreaders one or two jumpers, two trainers ,and a roper, the Spreader main character of the race he provokes the cow and dodges it at the last moment, by practicing the feigned gap or the gap on the jump, The Trainer dressed in white he must correctly place the cow in the arena in relation to the spreader, The L’Escalot general classification of spreaders and jumpers during the season, The La Ganaderia (livestock) , herd of Landaise cows engaged in racing, The Sauteur a gymnast who does the angel jump, the somersault, the twisted somersault, or a jump with his feet in a beret, his legs tied by a tie, ok you got it !

The Parc de l’Oseraie of Les Mureaux !

I found old paper pictures to bring memories of visiting this park for the flower event with the family, my dear late wife Martine love it! I like to bring it to life in my blog, for all time’s sake and the memories of always.  The kids playing are my boys !! Therefore, this is my rendition to the Parc de l’Oséraie of Les Mureaux ! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Parc de l’Oseraie is located in Les Mureaux in the Yvelines dept 78, on the banks of the Seine river and in the region of Île de France.  It extends from the Rhine and Danube bridge (see post), at the entrance to the city, to the rue des Gros Murs, along the towpath.

Between 1876 and 1879, a private individual, Henri Michelet, had a brick and millstone property built by the architect Jules Saulnier. This construction, called the Maison Bouvaist house (from the name of Doctor Bouvaist, the last private owner), was bought by the town at the end of the 20C, It was until 2006 a Paleoscope, intended for experimental archaeology. The house inspired by the Gothic style, this brick and millstone mansion, with its polychrome facade and spire, hosts various events throughout the year. It brilliantly illustrates the eclectic architecture of the 19C which borrows architectural elements from different styles. In addition to the general Gothic inspiration, certain elements of the facade were also inspired by Moorish architecture.

In addition to this house, the park, whose wall runs along the towpath, includes a pond, a garden bridge and an artificial island. Planted with chestnut trees, Today, this wooded park of 221 trees is made up of a pond, a bridge, an artificial island, a children’s play area, green spaces for amenities as well as an educational apiary,

Since 2004, the Fleur en Seine event has been held there every year. The large lawns around the mansion welcome Fleurs en Seine every 3rd weekend of September, where for 2 days all the craftsmen working around the garden (plants, furniture, arts and decorations, conferences, etc.) come together for the delight of visitors. There you go folks, another dandy in my former hangout in the Yvelines. This Fleur en Seine at the Parc de l’Oséraie is a very nice event for all nature garden lovers, worth the detour me think. Again, hope you enjoy it as I.

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!

Memories of Meulan en Yvelines !

The town of Meulan-en-Yvelines in dept 78 Yvelines and in the Île de France region sits on the right bank of the Seine river, 16 km from Mantes-la-Jolie, 33 km from Versailles, prefecture of the department, and 40 km from Paris, The town I knew was name Meulan but because of strong confusion over the Meulan in Seine et Marne dept 77 on July 11 2010 change name to Meulan en Yvelines.

The memories lingered of crossing this bridge for sadder reasons (see below), A road bridge, the Pont du Rhin et Danube bridge, rebuilt in 1957, connects Meulan to Les Mureaux. The municipal territory includes two islands of the Seine, the island of Fort and the island Belle, the latter being extended by the island of Mézy. The Rhin and Danube bridge is a metal structure bridge that crosses the Seine over a length of 530 meters between Meulan-en-Yvelines and Les Mureaux, resting on Belle Island. It is actually made up of two successive bridges: the first crosses the navigable arm for 160 meters between Les Mureaux and Île Belle, supported by two piles immersed in the river; the second crosses the arms of Saint-Côme and Meulan for 120 meters by leaning on a pile located at the tip of the island of Fort. The two bridges are not aligned and are connected by a two-lane road about 250 meters long, which also serves the islands of the Seine (Belle Island and Fort Island). This bridge, put into service in 1953, replaces the old large bridge of Meulan, destroyed by the Allied bombings in May 1944. missing four arches, gives access to a 19C farmhouse; it belongs to the town. The Saint-Côme bridge which crosses the Seine over a length of 55 meters between Île Belle and Île du Fort.

The hospital of Meulan-Les Mureaux is where my dear late mom Gladys was care for during her ordeal of an uncurable disease call Pulmonary Fibrosis ultimately dying at our house on December 27 2007.  Many memorable sad moments of coming here on all her appointment for cures, she was a brave lady never complaint, a tough Guanche of Tenerife heritage ! RIP never to be forgotten, The hospital is a Membre du Groupement hospitalier de territoire des Yvelines Nord or Member of the Northern Yvelines Territory Hospital Group, the Intercommunal Hospital Center of Meulan – Les Mureaux (CHIMM) at 1 rue du Fort, A common management was set up in 2015 between the CHI of Poissy – Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the CH of Mantes-la-Jolie, extended in December 2018 to the CHI of Meulan – Les Mureaux, all three members of the . Groupement hospitalier de territoire des Yvelines Nord or Northern Yvelines territory hospital group.

A bit of history I like:

It became the seat of the county of Meulan, and was sacked in 878, by the Vikings led by Rollon , Around the 10C, it was the capital of the counts of Meulan. The city was joined to the royal domain in 1204 by Philippe Auguste. Reunited with the royal domain this city became the seat of a provostship which appears in the year of 1234, but was included in the dower of Blanche de Castille, in that of Marguerite de Provence, then in the prerogative of the house of Evreux. At the Treaty of Avignon in 1365, Charles II of Navarre had to agree to exchange the towns of Meulan and Mantes for Montpellier. The financial conditions of this exchange caused many conflicts between the King of Navarre and Charles V which lasted until 1375, Meulan was under the Old Regime (monarchy) a staging post for stagecoaches on the Caen-Paris road , During the French revolution ,the old Gothic Church of Saint-Nicolas is converted into a corn exchange. This is the only church in town since then, and is at rue de l’Eglise, In 1900, the committee of the Summer Olympics, through the Cercle de la voile de Paris, chose the lake of Meulan to host the nautical events. This same body of water again hosted the boating events of the 1924 Summer Olympics. On August 27, 1944, American troops arriving by Les Mureaux crossed the Seine on pontoons, then continued their progress towards Condécourt and Longuesse.

There you go folks, you can tell Meulan en Yvelines is not a tourist town but worth a stop over on your way from Paris to Normandy on either the A15/D14 or the A13 roads. I am happy to have it in my blog, memories forever. Thanks for reading me since Nov 26 2010! Nevertheless, hope you enjoy the post to know a bit more about me.

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!
