The town of Réguiny is located near Crédin, Naizin, Moréac, Radenac, and Pleugriffet. It is 12 km from Rohan, 22 km from Pontivy, 28 km from Ploërmel, 39 km from Vannes., and 41 km from my house!

The history of the Church Saint Clair of Réguiny is first of all that of its parish and, perhaps even, going back further in time, that of the evangelization of the locality, the small Gallo-Roman town of Regina, by Saint Clair, on whose tomb an oratory was built, then, right next to it, the primitive church.

The Saint-Clair Church built between 1899-1906), started in 1899 , and blessed on September 8 1906. It replaces an older church with nave and transept. The monumental bell tower and its spire were not started until 1904. A funerary slab with the effigy of a bishop in pontifical ornaments, called Saint Clair, which dates from the 17C, has been preserved. The tomb of Saint Clair consists, in fact, of a flat stone decorated with a bas-relief representing the saint in bishop’s costume with the miter and the crosier. The church houses the statues of the Child Jesus, Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary. The windows of the choir, date from 1905.

The Saint Clair Church and tomb of the saint. Saint Clair was the first Bishop of Nantes towards the end of the 3C.It is ,said that Réguiny guards the fountain, the tomb and the head of Saint Clair, The fountain as it is very rare that every saint in Brittany does not have his own. The one shown at Réguiny is about a km from the town, close to the village of Kerbellec and located in 1876 on private property. A rather heavy construction in granite covers it: at the bottom is the statue of the bishop. A pool, intended for the ablutions of the sick, receives the overflow of water, Feast of Blessed Clair, bishop and confessor. This saint was the first bishop of the Church of Nantes, who, sent by the Roman Pontiff to this same Church, brought with him the nail which Saint Peter had on his right hand during his martyrdom, and which we have in great veneration. But the inaccuracy of certain dates and of a few details nevertheless leaves the certainty that Saint Clair sowed the gospel truths throughout upper Brittany. The Church of Vannes is as positive on this point as that of Nantes. Not only Réguiny shows the tomb and the fountain of Saint Clair; the village of Kerbellec (literally,Breton for the house of the priest) is still indicated as the place where he resided, and the surrounding parishes, such as the cathedral of Nantes and the church of Réguiny, are honored to owe their foundation to the same missionary. Deciphered the mutilated inscription that surrounds the venerated tomb at Réguiny. This inscription lets us read that Saint Clair died in this place, in the year 96. Others, on the contrary, set the date of his death at the late 3C, around 275 and even at the beginning of the 4C at 309. The tomb of Saint Clair, the apostle of the Nantes region, can be seen in a small chapel, called Saint Clair, near the parish church of Réguiny, in the cemetery. The constant tradition of the Church of Vannes that the head remained in Réguiny, where he still is, and one arm in the chapel of the Hospice, in Josselin, where he is still honored, in the sanctuary, near the altar . According to a tradition that the Church of Vannes has adopted and which seems unassailable, the head of Saint Clair would never have left Réguiny. For centuries, at least, its presence has been noted there in the most formal way. There is a slab decorated with a bas-relief representing the saint wearing his miter and carrying his crosier is his supposed tomb.

Finally, a bit of history I like. The Bretons, who arrived in this area from the 6C, implanted their language and their customs there. All the old names of villages are still Breton, During the French revolution, the chouannerie (rebels against the French revolution ideas) was very active, like everywhere in Brittany. There was notably a certain chief Cobigo, attached to the division of Colonel Guillemot, known as the “king of Bignan”. During WWII, Réguiny played a significant role in the resistance. An English airman, the Lieutenant-Colonel Clifford, died there, his grave is in the cemetery and a street bears his name.

Unfortunately, not much information on the town webpage or tourist sites, the information above is from brochures in the church and the history on the town as well as Breton web sources, There you go folks, another dandy in my Morbihan, always amazing finds, I end this trip in Réguiny ; road warrior ways are the best way to see and know the country, any country, I hope you enjoy these posts and especially my last stop of today on the Church Saint Clair of Réquiny !!

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!

The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul of Crédin !!

Again, back in my road warrior mode in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France, The possibilities are endless and I am just starting, really ! The town of Crédin is located 18 km from Pontivy, 5 km from Rohan ,46 km from Vannes , and 44 km from my house, The town is the center of a territory, limited by the Oust river, a tributary of the Evel, towns of Saint-Gouvry, Rohan, Réguiny and Pleugriffet.

You have here the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Church dedicated to Saint Peter was surrounded by a cemetery full of huge abalones. A stone cross, which stood behind the choir, was broken during the French revolution, because it was decorated with royal emblems (fleurs de lys). The new church taking as a model the Church of the Abbey of Timadeuc (see post) of 13C Romanesque style.

The new Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul built between 1900-1904. The church was built on the site of the primitive church of the 16-17C, is recognizable from afar by its slender appearance, The church has Romanesque remains, was demolished in 1900 and rebuilt in 1902. The parish notebook of 1898 reads “besides that the church threatened with ruin, it was notoriously insufficient for the population. The roof was in a state of complete disrepair”. The work was awarded on May 20, 1902 It has a nave, aisles and transept. The church houses a Stations of the Cross from the Sacred Art Workshops, founded by Maurice Denis, a Norman painter.  The new parish church, dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul, apostles, has the shape of a Latin cross. Its doors and windows are in the ogival style, and the back window of the choir still has mullions arranged in flames and four leaves. The side altars are under the invocation of the Blessed Virgin and the Guardian Angel.

Other interesting thing to see eventually is the Saint-Maudan Chapel built in 1660, rebuilt in 1669. It is a small rectangular chapel. The chapel houses a statue of the Virgin and Child in polychrome wood from the 17C, a statue of Saint Sebastian in polychrome wood from the 16C and a statue of Saint Maudan from the 17C. The wooden stalls are from the 18C,

The Abbey Notre-Dame de Timadeuc of Bréhan !!!

Again, back in my road warrior mode in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France, The possibilities are endless and I am just starting, really ! I went today to several towns never before been and the trip was awesome with me the boys and Rex, our dog, Cruising right along I came into the town of Bréhan a planned stop ,and saw a wonderful abbey good enough to included it in my blog, Therefore, here is the first on the Abbey Notre Dame de Timadeuc of Bréhan !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

Right off the bat, we missed timing again, part of the risks of road warrior thrills in my lovely Bretagne and belle France, They do cheeses here very good my sons eat it, and we arrive by noonish , the store was close for their lunch oh well we will be back eventually, The cheeses are the Trappe and the Timanoix. From 1871, the first cheeses came out of the abbey cellars , the oldest cheeses of Brittany in an abbey.

The Abbey Notre-Dame de Timadeuc is an abbey of Cistercian-Trappist monks located in Bréhan in the Pays des Rohan, right off the road D2 in a village of Timadeuc part of Bréhan ,and not far from the Oust river and the Canal Nantes Brest. It was founded on July 22, 1841 by three monks from the Abbey of La Trappe in Perche. It is 54 km from my house.

This community owed its establishment and its survival in the early days to the generosity of the Countess of Bot who sold for a modest price the manor of Timadeuc, then very dilapidated, to establish a monastery there. The first monks lived for a time, housed free of charge, in the neighboring castle of Quengo, the time to make Timadeuc habitable. The priory and its buildings were built from 1842 to 1846, in particular from materials taken from the ruins of the Château de Rohan. The first laying of the church took place on April 1, 1842, its consecration on September 1, 1846.

In 1895, the old church was destroyed, a new one in the neo-Gothic style was rebuilt from 1895 to 1898: the laying of the first stone, engraved with the vintage of 1895, was done in the apse. In a cavity made in this “foundation stone” was placed a heart of lead containing medals of the Blessed Virgin, Saint Joseph, Saint Benedict, Saint Anne and the Guardian Angel. The Law of Separation of Church and State in 1905 threatened the existence of the abbey: twelve monks left Timadeuc and retired to Notre-Dame du Petit Clairvaux in Canada in 1903 to prepare for the exile of the community which did not take place. The definitive monastery of Timadeuc was built between 1925 and 1930.

The abbey was a center of resistance during WWII, under the authority of its abbot father, Dom Dominique Nogues, who was also an agent of the Pat O’Leary network. This contribution to the Resistance earned the Notre Dame Abbey of Timadeuc,  the French Resistance Medal in 1946, It was raised in 1946 in memory of Father Guénaël of Timadeuc Abbey, the Calvary of Timadeuc recalls his courage and the role of the abbey which served as a reception center for resistance fighters and fugitives, and as an arms cache (after the airdropping of weapons, they were tested on the spot). Arrested on June 14, 1943 by the Gestapo and deported for acts of resistance, the father died on January 3, 1945 at the Buchenwald camp.

The Notre-Dame Church was rebuilt on the ruins of the old church between 1880 and 1884, the parish church of Bréhan was inaugurated and consecrated on September 10, 1884. In neo-Gothic style, this large coated stone building is drawn on the plan of a Latin cross.

It was completely demolished at the end of the 19C and replaced by a Gothic-style building consecrated on September 10, 1884. The pulpit and the railings of the baptismal font date from the 19C. A surprise church nicer than look outside, another surprise in deep Morbihan!

An anecdote, in 1484, the first printing press in Brittany was set up in Bréhan-Loudéac, by the will of Jean Rohan-du-Gué-de-l’Isle. Two printers set it up, Robin Foucquet and Jean Crès. Twelve books printed in Bréhan reached us on December 16, 1484, the first Breton incunabula came out: Le Trespassement Nostre-Dame
