Our culinary tour of Rome !

We have gone to Rome as a family vacation and rented an apartment to do our own cooking /shopping in local markets. However, as we venture out into the city we do need to eat on the run. Therefore , we had some encounters I will like to share in my blog with an unique creative post, our culinary tour of Rome !

There is so much to eat there and I only going to mention the ones I have been with the family vacation as on business trips there is another world altogether. After reviewing this older post to updated, I found out many have closed sadly. Anyway, just for the memories of always and family happier moments; here is my take on eating out inexpensive in Rome.

Let me give you a shopping center where we found a great German restaurant oh yeah! Call it world mobility but there is choices everywhere. The shopping center is Porta di Roma or Gate of Rome just a bit outside the city center but we took the bus! The shopping center of Porta di Roma is a wonderfully laid out, modern shopping center which offers a number of services for its customers  Inside this mall, there are cafes, bars, restaurants, and a children play area, including a train that brings children on a little tour. Among the many stores you’ll find clothing stores, sport equipment, accessories for men and women, shoe stores, electronics, hair dressers, skin care shops and many more. Porta di Roma also has a large movie theatre and an ample parking garage. To get to Porta di Roma, take the n. 38 bus that leaves every 10 minutes from Termini train station in the direction of Baseggio. The shopping center is at the end of the line Baseggio-Centro Commerciale Porta di Roma.

And as usual with us trying everything, our best meal was a German oriented place in Weiner Haus near the shopping center Porta di RomaA German beer house with plenty of sausages and beers of course! The whole family love it!!! The Weiner Haus at Porta di Roma : https://wienerhaus.it/i-nostri-ristoranti/roma-porta-di-roma

There we end up buying better items at the Auchan supermarket and gourmet grocery stores and cooking it at the apartment with great Italian wines from Toscana and beers Moratti and Peroni lol!!! Here for the memories as the chain was purchase by Conad, Porta di Roma shopping center : https://porta-di-roma.klepierre.it/dove-siamo-orari/

We check out Cinecitta due at the metro line by the same name but it was just a small shopping althought nice AC in hot Rome and good gelato there at Armonia del Gelato. Here just for the memories as it was a stand in middle of hallway and do not see on their page anymore: https://www.cinecittadue.com/contatti/

Then, let me tell you about Gustando Roma, this is a bit touristic near the Colosseum (see post) so the prices are a bit high but the ambiance in the basement is sublime and worth it; of course the food is good. Enjoying Rome in the shadow of the Colosseum, along the promenade of Fori Imperiali,(see post) you  are  enjoying Rome. And it rises exactly like the small Flavian amphitheatre built inside, which surrounds part of the room highlighting its best specialty: ice cream! Pic with my dear late wife Martine and the boys. The good RestaurantGuru reviews puts out their menu : https://restaurantguru.com/Gustando-Roma-Rome/menu

They have an old Facebook page so check if still open: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gustando-Roma/722234264481444

Il Gelato di Procopio (sort of like the ice cream of pinochio) we come back for the moment! Again and again, we even found out one of the servers spoked French . They ave excellent ice creams, choice of various fragrances. A special stroke of heart for Pistachio and Procopio that are just sublime. Perfect value for money. And always catch it on the way back to our apartment. Il gelato dei proscopio along via xxi Aprile near metro Bologna on our way in out of our apartment! Unfortunately here for the memories as it is closed. I was told there is another address maybe same owners but cannot confirm.

One of our all time favorite and even stop on business trips is the Grand Caffe Cavour at Piazza  Cavour. Of course, don’t get me wrong this is just for a beer or coffee business meeting, etc while enjoying the beautiful Piazza Cavour (see post) square. The food is not that good. I cannot confirm if closed but can’t find their webpage so check;here for the memories of always.

Hennebont ramparts fortified to Porte Broërec’h oct22

You must see the ramparts, placed at the old fortification of the times of Duke Jean I (13C). Overcoming many wars such as the one of the succession of Brittany and the war of the league in 1590. The towers crown the corners at four cardinal points ,now only 3 remained, Tour St Nicolas (at south side), Tour des Carmes,(north east side), and the fortified porte or door at the east side, built before the 14C.  This last one, known as  Porte Broërec’h, the entry door to the enclosed city is flanked by two twins towers link by a bridge conserving the machinary of the raising bridge. A round walkway is seen on top of the towers whre great views of the city can be seen today.

The town is 10 km from Lorient, 45 km from Vannes , and only 24 km from my house, and by now we have come here several times. In my new road warrior rides in my beautiful Morbihan, I came back to the Basilica Notre Dame du Paradis of Hennebont !! Hope the post will bring you over, worth it me think. Hope you enjoy the post as I.

There is a nice fortified town near me that is just a gem and  sort of like an off the beaten path . This is an impressive basilica when entering the main square of town, and is right in front of you ! I have written before couple posts on it but  will tell you a bit more with new pictures of the Basilica Notre Dame du Paradis or Our Lady of Paradise Basilica of Hennebont.

I have given you plenty of history from the basilica, tourist office, city, and my books. However, this time will give you the writings on the Friends of the Basilica Notre Dame du Paradis which I translated best possible.

In 1507, Anne, Queen of France and Duchess of Brittany, undertook a “Tro Breiz” (pilgrimage tour) to pray for the healing of her husband Louis XII. On the way to the basilica of Folgoët, she stops at Hennebont to pray in a small oratory located on the hill of Paradis. Following this visit, François Michart, a pious man and blacksmith by profession, decided to build a chapel in place of the oratory, worthy of the veneration he had for “Madame Marie”. In 1514, provided not without difficulty with all the authorizations, he undertook the construction of the chapel. The choir and the nave were completed in 1524, and the chapel was consecrated under the name of Notre-Dame de Paradis. François Michart died in 1527 and did not see the end of the construction, the tower and the bell tower were probably finished in 1530, or even a few years later.

In 1699, the plague struck Hennebont, the inhabitants put themselves under the protection of the Virgin Mary and vowed to offer her a solid silver statue which will be paraded in great procession, once a year through the city, decorated with flags. its colors blue and white. The French revolution interrupted the celebrations of the Feast of the Vow and in 1792, the statue seized by the revolutionaries was brought to Nantes to be melted down. Worship interrupted in the church did not resume until 1802 with the establishment of the Concordat.(peace of contenders the revolutionaries and chouans mostly),

In 1818, the inhabitants of Hennebont erected a new silvered bronze statue, which can be seen today in the Basilica Notre Dame du Paradis. The ceremonies of the Vow continues, This is why, in 1913, at the request of the bishop, and because of its notoriety and its influence, the pope decided to elevate the church to the rank of minor basilica.
