The Church of Notre Dame  is a granite church built in the style of the flamboyant Gothic, and you see on the outside, the beautiful flat bedside, the “men’s Porch” and the “ladies ‘ porch” each supporting a delicately serrated spoof of a shelter the statues of the once-polychrome Saints. The imposing church has been nicknamed “The Queen of the Breton Chapels”, a marvel of Gothic art.

The Church of Notre Dame is a high place of pilgrimage, and was built between 1420 and 1464, It will become parish church in 1908, It also has exceptional polychrome murals from the 3rd quarter of the 15C, produced by four groups of different artists, Bretons for the macabre dance and the spectacle of hell, of the French school for the musical angels and the life of Christ. The church of Kernascléden has all the riches of flamboyant Gothic architecture. To these are added, inside, the mural frescoes which constitute one of the examples of French art of the 15C such as under the vaults of the north brace: the Musician Angels and the Ascension; on the choir, scenes from the life of Mary and Jesus; and under the south transept, the Danse Macabre and the Representation of Hell.  Note in particular, in the porch of the apostles, the openwork foliage. Never had so much virtuosity been deployed to excavate a granite that was so rebellious with a chisel.

Curiosities of Kenascléden !

I am doing my best to introduce you to the off the beaten paths of my Brittany. Hope you are enjoying the ride as much as we do. This time the main topic is our wonderful  Kernascléden! The city center or Bourg here is located 13 km from Faouët, 11 km from Guémené-sur-Scorff and 29 km from Lorient, It is about 42 km from my house. The Maison de la Chauve-Souris or house of bats opened in 2006, after many years, one of the largest colonies of Greater Horseshoe Bats in Brittany has taken up residence in the attic of the Church Notre Dame. Several hundred individuals gather there in summer to give birth to their only baby. The museum completely restored in 2019, the ecomuseum is divided into 9 rooms over an area of 400 m² of scenography. Accessible from the age of 3, each room has its own adapted modules, photos, illustrations, videos and even a unique immersive sound room! The route ends with the live observation of the Greater Horseshoe Bats via remote controllable cameras. The top floor opens onto the reconstruction of a real attic allowing you to play the apprentice chiropterologist, equipped with a flashlight in search of hidden bats.

The Puits or wells of Ti Er Mad, These wells, consist of two molded pillars resting on a wide coping and supporting a lintel, all in granite in Brittany ; but notice balls on the wells quite characteristic in Morbihan , According to tradition, the number of studs or balls on the top of the lintel indicates the number of families who were allowed to draw water from it. This right would initially correspond to those having allowed the well to be dug. In fact, few could afford a well.

The town of Guémené sur Scorff is in my beautiful Morbihan and lovely Bretagne, Another off the beaten path place with pretty architecture of its monuments. This is a return visit and tell you about the curiosities of Guémené sur Scorff ! The town is about 43 km from my house, Hope you enjoy the post as I,

The halles were first built in 1634, and were located on what is now Place Loth. They housed the grain and flour market, the displays of sheets and linens, wholesalers and retailers alike. Sold in 1809, then acquired by the town in 1870 ; it was decided in 1923 to destroy it, safety and health being in question. Now Place des Halles, and rename Place Joseph-Loth, named after the linguist historian who was born in one of the houses there. Today, a new Halle built on rue Emile-Mazé, at the level of the intergenerational garden. With more than 100 m2, this halle will house public toilets and will offer a shaded area where some outdoor events can be organized in open air.

The Hôpital Alfred Brard hospital is located at rue Emile Mazé, A bit of history I like : The first hospital was done in 1642 and was located at rue Neuve, the hospices became very dilipated and insufficient, In 1912, thanks to deputy Alfred Brard a new hospital was done at the place call Le Belvédére ; this construction was stopped by WWI and work did not resume until 1923 ; the new hospital was completed on December 4, 1927. The new hospital in Guémené-sur-Scorff was the first modern establishment erected after WWI.  This congregation has been running the hospital since 1784 is the Congregation of the Daughters of Wisdom, whose motherhouse is located in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre (Vendée 85), particularly attached to hospital services.
