Curiosities of Normandie !!

I have passed thru and visit briefly as a road warrior in me. Normandie has been with me for a long time and many visits to its glorious sites. I like to update this post on text and links and hope you enjoy it as I. Therefore, here are some curiosities of Normandie !! We now take the trip on the N24 to Rennes and there the A84 to Caen and then the D579 to all these towns taken alternative routes along winding hilly roads and coasting by the beaches. Sublime !

One nice hilly town we go always is Équemauville located in the Department of Calvados 14 as all the towns here are. It is surrounded by the towns of Barneville-La-Bertran, Honfleur and Pennedepie. Équemauville is located 4 km from Honfleur. The Church of St. Peter, (St Pierre) is from the end of the 19C. Here in September 1477, the King of Portugal Alfonso V visited this Chapel every morning before returning to his Kingdom. Indeed, he would have decided to renounce his throne, writing his will in Honfleur.

We follow up with Villers-sur-Mer another dandy beach town. It has a wonderful beach front, and sandy beach.  The Church of Saint-Martin is impressive and worth coming back for more. It was built in the second half of the 19C on a neo Gothic style and enrich with wonderful stained glass.  And another nice Casino right across from the beach from the groupe Tranchant.

Other museums of Honfleur !!

And finally, would like to mention other museums of Honfleur in Calvados dept 14 of Normandy. These were less frequently but worth the detour me think. I have written several posts on the city ,but not one dedicated to the museums, Therefore, here is my rendition of the other museums of Honfleur. Hope you enjoy it as I.

The Naval Museum or Musée de la Marine is in the former church of St. Stephen (St Etienne), on the edge of the old basin. Quai Saint Etienne. Built in the 14C, the church of Saint-Etienne is the oldest in the city. Dedicated to the cult until the French revolution, it then served as a store, theatre and trading stock before hosting the sale of the large herring from 1802 to 1809.  Its steeple, ruined, was demolished in 1808. After 1809, it served as the real warehouse of customs until 1897 when it was ceded to the society of old Honfleur (Société du Vieux Honfleur) which restored it, had the bell tower re-erected, raised a grandstand, made stained glass and exhibited some of its collections from 1899.

It was in 1976 that the historical and maritime collections were transferred from the Ethnography mansion to the Saint-Etienne church. The models, engravings, and exhibits are the fruit of many gifts and bequests. All of them testify to the activities of the seafarers and the Honfleur society in the 18-19C such as fishing, naval constructions, the great trade, the popular crafts linked to the sea ,etc… The history and topography of the port are illustrated by a large collection of drawings, engravings, paintings or watercolours from the 18-19C.  In the Choir, you can admire a very beautiful model of the “Saint Bernadette”, witness of the local fishing of Honfleur at the beginning of the last century. In the nave, a stretcher on which was presented the blessed bread offered in this church by the codfish captains upon their return from Newfoundland. Very nice indeed.

The Musée d’Ethnographie, rue de la Prison . The Museum of Ethnography housed in the city’s former prison and in houses dating from the 16C, this museum presents reconstructions of Norman interiors: nine rooms with objects, costumes and old furniture.

The Maisons Satie museum of Honfleur !

Moving right along in the wonderful port city of Honfleur in Calvados dept 14 of Normandy, let me show you again one of my favorite museum in the city. I have written several posts on the city ,but not one dedicated to the museums, Therefore, here is my rendition of the Maisons Satie museum of Honfleur. Hope you enjoy it as I.

Composer, pianist, but also adept of painting and literature, Erik Satie corresponds to the honfleuraise identity. His compositions are both simple and ambitious, light and profound, in the image of the city that saw him born in 1866. Ironically, as he entered the Conservatoire de musique de Paris in 1879, his teachers did not give much of his musical career. However, the composer will collaborate with the greatest artists of his time such as Picasso, Picabia, Cocteau, etc  and influence among the greatest such as Debussy, Ravel or Stravinsky. It is the atypical history of this extraordinary artist that you will discover in this Museum, housed in his home. Instead of offering us a prefabricated environment, the Maisons Satie physically transport us to the composer’s very special universe-sometimes disturbing-with audacity and intelligence, so that, as the pieces come along, we actually have the impression of the spirit of Satie. A total immersion and a unique experience, which emerges enchanted and permeated by the poetry of the artist. As long as you know how to seize this moment, the urge is to prolong and enrich your culture. Maisons Satie located at 67, Boulevard Charles-V and 90, rue Haute

The Maisons Satie or Satie’s houses are the birthplace and museum since 1998 of the artist and classical music composer Erik Satie. The ensemble is made up of three houses in the Norman red half-timbered house style from the 15C. The avant-garde artist and music composer classic Erik Satie was born in this house on May 17, 1866. The Satie Houses are home to an original journey paying tribute to the musician and composer Erik Satie. With a very innovative concept, the Satie Houses offer everyone the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the musician’s work and spirit. Equipped with electronically controlled headphones, the visitor is guided through a succession of musical scenes to the rhythm of Erik Satie’s work. The scenography, combining sound, light, image and objects in a setting as whimsical and humorous as Erik Satie could be and involves the visitor in a visit that is both fun and informative.

Musée Eugéne Boudin of Honfleur !!!

Moving right along in the wonderful port city of Honfleur in Calvados dept 14 of Normandy, let me show you again one of my favorite museum in the city. I have written several posts on the city ,but not one dedicated to the museums, Therefore, here is my rendition of the Musée Eugéne Boudin of Honfleur. Hope you enjoy it as I.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The musée Eugène-Boudin  is a museum that revolves  around several themes, the main one being, of course, Eugène Boudin himself and the painters of the 19C. The paintings, evolving from the dark romanticism of Isabey to the luminous clarity of Monet, evoke the atmosphere of meetings at the Ferme Saint-Siméon inn, not far from Honfleur, where artists came to find the light of the Norman skies, of the water and gardens. The works of Eugène Boudin are surrounded by those of painters friends: Monet, Dubourg, Courbet, Jongkind to name a few. Two spaces present the 92 works of Boudin with paintings and drawings currently kept here. In one are the pastels, skies, views of Honfleur, scenes at the Ferme Saint-Siméon inn. In the second, oil paintings, beaches, portraits, landscapes and seascapes. Other rooms offer a journey through more contemporary painting devoted to 20C artists who lived or worked in Honfleur and Normandy: Vallotton, Marais, Dufy, Marquet, Cappiello and the painters of the Rouen school. Eugène-Louis Boudin  was a French painter, born in Honfleur on July 12, 1824, died in Deauville on August 8, 1898. He was one of the first French painters to capture landscapes outside a workshop. A great painter of seascapes, he is considered one of the precursors of Impressionism.

In the other rooms, oil paintings, beaches, portraits, landscapes and Marines. The Musée Eugéne Boudin is located at Place Erik-Satie. Sublime ! The Musée Eugéne Boudin was last renovated in 2016, offers 1,200 m² of permanent exhibition divided into nine rooms, housed in a 19C chapel and two modern buildings, one of which is widely open to the landscape of the estuary and the Pont de Normandie. The museum exhibits and preserves more than 2,500 paintings, sculptures, drawings or engravings, 700 photographs on glass plates from the years 1880-1920, more than 1,000 objects, headdresses, costumes, and furniture, a collection of more than 100 tourist posters on Normandy between 1880 and 1950 and a set of old toys from the 19-20C. From the Katia Granoff room on the third floor, you can admire the changing skies of the estuary and watch the wonderful clouds of Boudin pass by.
