Curiosities of Larmor Plage !!

Larmor-Plage is located on the west bank of the entrance to the harbor of Lorient which marks the confluence of the Blavet and Scorff rivers, it faces the island of Groix and the Atlantic Ocean. The territory of the town extends inside the harbor of Lorient, allowing a view on the peninsula of Gâvres, the Citadel of Port-Louis and Lorient (see posts).

I have done my road warrior tour of the coastal Morbihan around the towns of Quéven, Ploemeur, and Larmor Plage. Coming to the end of the cycle have some pictures which I think worthy of having in my blog for the memories of always. Hope you enjoy this kaléidoscope of mine! Therefore, here is my curiosities of Larmor Plage!

The Locqueltas district is from the 18C a site occupied by the army. A fort was built there before 1758.  It consists of twelve guns, a powder magazine and a guardhouse.  On the eve of the WWII, the fort only housed a modest armament. The Nazis naval gunners installed on the spot from 1940 did not modify anything until 1942. They then improved the defense of the fort by adding concrete works hidden in the middle of the wall and by arming it with six guns. The Locqueltas battery is now consisting of four concrete bunkers: two inside the fort and two others outside. Today, the Locqueltas district has been urbanized around the military space. Bunkers have been transformed into theatres. Others serve as municipal sheds or house a nautical club or associations of amateur fishermen. A campsite has also been established partly on the old battery. Sitting at end of Port Maria beach and out from the Kasino.

The plage Port-Maria beach is the most central and lively beach. Composed of ultra-fine white sand, this beautiful beach stretches for about 400 meters bordered by a pedestrian promenade where there are many restaurants and bars. With its Mickey club and its ephemeral library, it is one of the liveliest beaches in town. Indeed a beach worth coming back for it, we love it!

The Lafosse family carousel welcomes children on its wooden horses, a stone’s throw from the beach, every day of the week. This carousel, which is over 100 years old, has been restored after suffering damage during WWII. In the past, it was a horse harnessed inside that made it turn. Replaced by a gas generator, it now runs on electric power . Info open to children, from 11h to 12h30 and from 16h to 19h, every day until September.

The Notre-Dame fountain is located rue Beg-Tal-Men , on your way to the Church Notre Dame de Larmor (see post). A staircase gives access to the fountain which is against the bench of the path. The fountain is framed by low walls, the ossicle wall has a niche and a pediment. To its left is a kind of basin or stoup. Built in the 18C.  Until the last war, some of these water points were still used as drinking water reservoirs, washing places or drinking troughs. On weekends, they served as a place of pilgrimage, walk, meeting. The main source of Larmor-Plage, Notre-Dame-de-la-Clarté, was considered the only source of healing water. Coins were thrown into it to restore sight and hope. Now , there is work going on to develop the paths to access the buildings around it.

The Church Notre Dame de Larmor of Larmor Plage !

I have a couple posts on the town and for sure the Church Notre Dame de Larmor. We were on my road warrior trips in my beautiful Morbihan and nice memories made us past by here again. Hope you enjoy the post as I

As have plenty on the church in previous post will cut the text short just to show you the new pictures; which are more and better me think. Therefore, here is my new take on the Church Notre Dame de Larmor of Larmor Plage!

The Church Notre-Dame de Larmor, is the ancient chapel of pilgrimage Notre-Dame de L’Armor, built before the creation of the town of Larmor-Plage, on the parish of Ploemeur. The building is built on a promontory near the shore which it’s situation facing the inclement weather imposes regular restorations. There are significant architectural elements of the 14C, 16C and 17C.

The Church Notre Dame de Larmor contains remarkable objects, some in particular are the commemorative plaque, in granite, of the construction of the chapel bearing the inscription 1506.

The parish Church Notre-Dame, blessed on July 29, 1880. It had as godmother of the bells, for the donation the Countess Dillon. Among the statues and paintings that adorn the Church, were donations or works of parishioners, the statue of Notre Dame of Larmor, in polychrome wood, holding a three-masts in her left hand and leaning with her right hand on a naval anchor and the other, a small painting watercolor depicting a brick-goëlette, the “Giralda”, offered by Captain Héno, in gratitude for being released safely, him and his crew, of a terrible storm in the North Atlantic in 1878.

The plage d l’anse du stole of Ploemeur !

So my road warrior tours in my beautiful Morbihan and many nice memories brought me back to Ploemeur. I have several posts on it in my blog on the town and its beaches. However, today, I saw a new one ,yes we have plenty one for more than a year visiting every day!! This one is new the plage de l’Anse du Stole in the village of Lomener, district of the city of Ploemeur. This beach is only 42 km (about 26 miles) from my house. Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Ploemeur plage de l'anse du stole beach right jun22

Ploemeur is a town on the Atlantic coast bordering four cities: Lorient, Larmor-Plage, Guidel and Quéven. (see posts) It has 17 km of coastline! On this range there are several beaches, without counting several coves. The way to the sea is a 13 km circuit linking the center of Ploemeur to the seaside.

The plage de l’Anse du Stole in the village of  Lomener is 600 meters long and more youth activities, even if I saw older folks there today. The white sand beach is very nice indeed worth a detour or retour !

Ploemeur plage de l'anse du stole beach left jun22

The village of Lomener,is a former sardine fishing port. This small bay beach, is made up of fine sand. It is exposed to swells from the southern sector coming from the Atlantic. This site is very easy to access, especially for people with disabilities. Like the neighboring beaches, the sand of Anse du Stole beach is fine and white. It is largely from the Kaolins, located further inland. Concave in shape, rounded inwards and with an intermediate beach profile, i.e. the slope of the beach is neither too gentle nor too steep, Anse du Stole beach has all the characteristics of a a classic Morbihan bay beach , Due to its geographical location, westerly swells cannot reach it. In turbulent times, it is not uncommon to see the swell crashing on the main breakwater of the port, very popular with photographers and journalists to illustrate articles on storms. Today, the port of Lomener is mainly dedicated to yachting and can also allow you to reach the island of Groix during the summer season.

Hope you enjoy the latest visit to a beach of Ploemeur by yours truly, the road warrior.
