The port of Bélon of the Bélon !

Riec-sur-Bélon and Moëlan sur Mer are towns in the Finistère Dept 29 of my lovely Bretagne, and in the old Cornouaille (cornwall). Belon is the name of a river that the ancients called “Beln “. I have written before on the town, but need to tell you more about its wonderful port of Bélon, and plenty of oysters activity, the best in France and maybe more….

The area is large for oysters here but for the flat oyster it is at Riec Sur Belon. A quiet town but a much better port, because it is by the Port du Belon across the estaury to fing the growers.

The Belon oyster is an oyster with a rounded shape with a firm flesh of white color. In this case, it is sometimes nutted with brown or grey colors. It can be eaten rather raw, rather hot, and is best known for its unique and distinctive hazelnut flavor.  The oyster aquaculture activity begins in the Belon estuary in the mid-19C by the Lord du Balay installed its first oyster park in 1857, the Solminihac family began this activity in 1864, the Cadoret family in 1872. Several renowned oyster growers are still in activity in Riec-sur-Bélon, including Thaëron House, Château de Bélon (Solminihac family) Anne de Bélon, Noblet establishments. We have, also, enjoy Chez Jacky where we have even take home oysters!

Very typical, the port of Bélon on the Moëlan sur Mer side that is dominated by a mansion built between the 15C and 19C, from where the view of the ocean is breathtaking. In the direction of the ocean, you will discover the remains of Fort du Bélon which watch at the entrance to the estuary.

From the bay of Kerfany, the port of Bélon can be discovered after entering the oyster-farming Bélon river , cradle of the flat oyster “la Belon”. The river flows between remarkable banks that many painters have immortalized. It is an excellent shelter for boats and there are all services nearby. Every day when the fishing boats arrive, a sale of seafood products is organized on the port stall. Many activities are practiced, from coastal fishing to the breeding of flat and cupped oysters through the discovery by boat of the Bélon and the Aven rivers.

The Church St Pierre of Riec sur Bélon, part II !

Again, still on my road warrior mode, went back to a familiar place that we love and enjoy it. I decided to come back to  Riec sur Bélon ! I have written before on the town and its church so will cut short the intro on the Church St Pierre or St Peter for this new post with new pictures. Hope you enjoy it as I.

To begin, the town of Riec sur Bélon is in the Finistére dept 29 of my lovely Bretagne. It is located at 12 km from Quimperlé, 17 km from Concarneau, 27 km from Lorient and 35 km from Quimper. And 60 km (about 37 miles)  from my house!

The Church St Pierre has a Gothic bell tower, a nave of five bays with side aisles, a transept and a choir. The layout is in the shape of a papal cross. The bell tower with its beautiful Gothic spire, is flanked by a turret of canted staircase giving access to the chamber of the bells. The church was rebuilt in 1872-1873,and part of the materials from the old 15-16C bell tower were reused. The choir and the nave were built in 1771 on the site of a religious sanctuary mentioned in a parish act in 1510. The western facade, the bell tower and two bays of the nave date from 1875 and respect the style of previous constructions. Inside is a polychrome oak wood pieta and a Christ in a brown tunic.

As most of the story is on the first post on the St Peter’s Church, will as said, cut the text short here and just add the new pictures which are more descriptive than on the first post.  The laidout is in the form of a papal cross.  The clock dates from 1875.

You can read my previous posts on it in my blog so will cut the text short, just to add the new pictures. Hope you enjoy it as I.

The parish Church Saint-Melaine,  built in 1876-1878 on the site of a former oratory destroyed in the 9C, and of an ancient churches restored in 1599. This church is in Moëlan sur Mer ,less than an hour from my house by car !

The Church St Melaine, which was consecrated in June 1879, comprises a nave of five bays with aisles, a transept and a choir consisting of two straight spans with aisles and a three-span roundabout surrounded by a carole on which three chapels radiates from. The Bell Tower is without a gallery. The Church of St Melaine houses the statues of Saint John the Baptist, Saint Melaine and Saint Corentin.

It comprises a chancel formed by two straight bays with aisles. The bell tower is without a gallery. It is impressive outside even if inside looks smaller, the church is surrounded by plenty of shops/restos and from here is an easy jump to Clohars-Carnoët (see posts) on the road D24. It is in dept 29 Finistére and less than an hour from my house ! The road D116/D16 takes you to the bigger town of Quimperlé (see posts) and into the freeway N165. Lovely ride indeed
