Susmiou and the fisherman!!

So this is a fine example of my road warrior trips in my belle France. I passed by so many towns, usually they go unnotice and no pictures. Sometimes there is a curiosity in them and I go in or past by city center as was the case of Susmiou on the D936. Let me tell you about the fisherman statue  on the road here! Hope you enjoy the off the beaten path of this post need to have it in my blog.

The small town of Susmiou is located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department 64 in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is located 44 km from Pau, 22 km from Oloron-Sainte-Marie.

Historically and culturally, Susmiou is part of the province of Béarn, which was also a state and which presents a historical and cultural unity which is opposed by a striking diversity of landscapes with tormented relief. The town of Susmiou had two secular abbeys, vassals of the viscounty of Béarn ; the abadie-jusan and the abadie-susan of Susmio. In 1385, Susmiou depended on the Bailiwick of Navarrenx. The Barony of Gabaston, vassal of the Viscounty of Béarn, was composed of Angous, Navailles and Susmiou. There is one building of note here, the Church Sainte Catherine of Alexandria.

The fisherman statue at the Navarrenx / Susmiou D936 roundabout. The scene represents a fisherman with his rod of 10 meters long pulling a salmon of about 2.70 meters ! out of the water, just before taking the gaff… Impressive in beauty and truth! 300 kg of stainless steel totally unalterable to air, water and acids, 60 square meters of stainless steel surface in 6 and 8 tenths of a thickness; all worked by cold hammering and spot welded to avoid deformations with an interior reinforcement and heating zones in places to give color. Awesome !

Susmiou

We actually started from Pau where we were base direction Oloron Sainte Marie, then here took the road D936 to Oloron Sainte Marie towards Susmiou and the nice rondpoint of the fisherman statue past Sauveterre de Béarn to Bayonne connecting with the A63 to Bordeaux, Wonderful territory which this road warrior enjoy much !

There you go folks, a unique brief post on a nice anecdote of the road warrior which are many but will bring them out as remember them lol!!! France is a moveable feast indeed or Paris est une fête, which he should have expanded ! Hope you enjoy the anecdote on Susmiou, and do run the roads of France!

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all!!!

Château de Suscinio of Sarzeau , part II

This is a wonderful medieval castle once residence of the Dukes of Brittany, and is about an hour from my house.  I have written on it before in my blog, but left some pictures that should be in, so therefore, here is my second take on the Château de Suscinio of Sarzeau, part II. Hope you enjoy it as I.

Sus castle arriving jan14

My twin boys first class excursion locally was here, and later the whole family came to see it. Gorgeous historical and architecturally stunning me think. Let me tell you a bit on the Château de Suscinio part of the town of Sarzeau in the Rhuys peninsula!   We came to see the area, even thinking for a while of  purchasing a home here. I am talking of course about the Château de Suscinio, former home of the Dukes of Brittany and right near me in the Presqu’île de Rhuys (peninsula).

Flanked by impressive towers topped with beautiful conical roofs, the fortress is reflected in the water of its moats which still protect it today. A complete enclosure dates from the Middle Ages, when, as a ducal residence, the castle had all the attributes: forest, ponds, salt marshes, vineyards, mills… A whole society organized to provide the lord and his suite with everything necessary for a comfortable daily life, but also an important source of income.

The Domaine de Suscinio is a castle whose visit is particularly suitable for families and children! Thus, throughout the year and in particular during each school holiday period, specific activities are offered to family audiences. The castle has some great surprises in store for you to enjoy with the family: workshops, shows, fun trails, archaeological excavations, etc… And in season, you will discover the hunting camp and its dedicated activities outdoors.

The Estate of Suscinio , classified as a Sensitive Natural Area, is a protected area. To discover the exceptional richness of the fauna and flora found there, educational trails will also be offered.

From November 8, 2021 until the beginning of March 2022, the Domaine de Suscinio closes its doors to visitors to make way for artisans and heritage workers for work aimed at making the castle accessible to as many people as possible with the installation of an elevator in the Logis Ducal.

One other thing not to missed when coming by here is the Tome cheese! The cheese farm of Suscinio produces the excellent Tome de Rhuys, with the milk of its pie-noir cows. Going to get your cheese, you can see some peaceful representatives of this ancient Breton breed, which is particularly fond of Morbihan, grazing. Note, if you have a small or big peck, this family of cheese-breeders has opened a café-restaurant. In a half-rustic, half-agricultural setting, the Pie Noir café invites you to savor food and drinks made of course with farm products! Pie Noir Café, 9, route Duchesse Isabeau d’Ecosse, Sarzeau. The arts in Sainte-Anne d’Auray!!!

The city of Sainte-Anne d’Auray been only about 11 km from our house and passing by it many times in the week, It is one of the biggest shrine in France, and have several posts on it in my blog. This will be condense update of two older posts to tell you about Sainte Anne d’Auray and the sacred arts in the basilica. Hope you enjoy it as I.

I like to tell you a bit more on the Basilica Sainte Anne. The sanctuary of the patron saint of Brittany, Sainte Anne. according to manuscripts from the 2-3C  , She is the mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ! Since ,I have written so much on it in the my past posts, let me give some glimpses of what this is. It is the third most visited pèlerinage in France after Lourdes, and St Thérese de Lisieux with sometimes almost 500K persons in this small town, huge !  Saint Anne d’Auray is a religious town. Sainte Anne has a huge basilica compound here, with statues, memorials to the dead, and plaques all over, even one remembering the visit by Pope John Paul II in 1996. coming on the road D102, passing the necropolis or cementary of the French and Belgium troops in WWII as well as those of WWI and the 1870 war on the French side. Then you can see from the parking the Basilica at a distance ,and the statue of Saint Anne ,right on the park near the Mémorial to the fallen Bretons in the wars. A few meters from the Basilica you can visit the house of Yvon and Guillemette Nicolazic. Yvon was the farmer who found a figure doll of a Virgin in the fields and who heard telling him to built the temple.  This is Sainte Anne that which the Bretons consider as their grandmother is sometimes confidential or protective. It dries tears and comforts without judging or betraying. In the basilica, opposite the ermine-shaped reliquary containing bones of Sainte Anne offered by king Louis XIII in thanks for the birth of Louis Dieudonné, future Louis XIV, we pray to the grandmother of Jesus in the hope of founding a family.

Actually ,the main reason we came in this time was for an exhibition of religious artifacts from many churches and chapels in the Morbihan deparment on expo at the Cloisters of the basilica of Sainte Anne d’Auray. Free with a contribution as you wish. The display on the two floors of the cloister centered around 40 pieces of religious art.  Coming from the pays de Vannes and Vilaine are statues of Mercure painting of Saint Patern, scupltures of Saint Roch and Saint Sébastian etc.  Pays de Ploëmel (pays means region), is sculptures of Saint Anne , painting of donation of rosary 17C, sculpture of Saint James, etc. Pays de Cornouaille morbihannaise and Pontivy, wooden poly of the virgin and the child, 16C, etc. Pays de Lorient and Auray, chinese porcelain virgin of Sainte Anne, , the bust relics of Saint Cornély in golden wood, etc.  The cloister is the only remaining building from the 17C, and a historical monument of France. On top there is a gallery where permanent and temporary expositions are held such as the one above. This has become the Academy of Music and Sacred Arts.

The Academy of Music and Sacred Arts which is sort of a school and even over radio Sainte Anne as well as a museum of sacred arts. The Academy of Music and Sacred Arts in Sainte-Anne-d´Auray has become the largest cultural center in the pays d’Auray, (that is the agglomeration or metro area) with deep roots. Founded in 1999 under the name Center for Sacred Music, the Academy of Sacred Music and Arts (aka=Admas) ensures, through music and the arts, the enhancement of religious and cultural heritage, mainly in Brittany.  The academy is in charge of the liturgical music of the sanctuary. It also offers a season of concerts.
