Ploërmel: Saint Armel !!

Here I am winding my road warrior trip to the outskirts of my beautiful Morbihan towards Rennes in my lovely Bretagne and my belle France. Again, this is a town been a while back, and thought it was time to revisit with new text and photos; talking about Ploërmel.

The town of Ploërmel is one of those that passing by the N24 or N166 roads do not seems much to stop by. However, once you do, you will see a vibrant city center and wonderful monuments to see as in previous posts. For now will tell you a bit on the Church of Saint Armel full of history I like!

The Church of Saint-Armel, founded in the 15C, was rebuilt between 1511 and 1602. The north portal, about 1530, presents scenes from the Gospel, and popular scenes. Inside, there is a wooden vault adorned with richly carved sand pits, stained glass including a Tree of Jesse , 1552, ornamentation, the tomb stone of the Dukes Jean II and Jean III and that of Philip of Montauban, Chancellor of Anne of Brittany. Originally the tombs of the two Dukes were placed in the Church of the Carmes. As the Church was destroyed by the League, the two tombs were moved to the Church of the Priory of St. Nicholas in 1591. Resettled in the new Church of the Carmes, they remained there until the French revolution. In 1790, the walls of the tombs were destroyed and the tomb was open. It was the General Council of Morbihan that restored the two tombs, in 1820, which were then deposited on a new and unique tomb placed in the Church of Saint-Armel.

The Church of Saint-Armel is the most emblematic and important monument of Ploërmel.  Now holding the tomb of the Dukes Jean II and Jean III of Brittany!  In the 13C, duke Jean II installed a Carmelite convent there where the dukes were buried. During the famous War of the Succession in Brittany (1341-1379), Ploërmel sided with the Montfort, who would be the ally of the English. In the 15C, Jean V made it one of the eight ducal bailiffs and increased patronage actions in Ploërmel, Tréguier, Le Folgoat, Kernascléden, etc. Still in the 15C, the city benefited from a general demographic boom, then, at the beginning of the 16C from the boom in Breton trade favored by political stability: Anne, Duchess of Brittany, was first of all the wife of kings of France Charles VIII , then Louis XII.   It is undoubtedly for this reason that one took pretext of the collapse of the median bell-tower of the church, in 1508, to undertake an almost complete reconstruction of the building. This was done from 1511 and in a Gothic style, punctuated with Renaissance touches. As such, the north portal, associated with its famous west buttress, is a masterpiece of 16C sculpture. The massive bell tower, meanwhile, saw its upper half rebuilt in the 18C. As is often the case among Breton churches, Saint-Armel was built with granite for the elevations and wood for the vaults. Indeed, its large stained glass allows light to flood a nave punctuated by high arcades. The stained glass, which was among the most beautiful in Brittany, suffered greatly in 1944 (WWII), whether in the Renaissance stained glass windows or those of the 19C.

The most interesting outer part is to the north. It is there that the famous north portal stands, shining with bas-reliefs because it is there that the church opened on the commercial district and its stalls. There is now a large open space: the Place Saint-Armel .The tower, which rises to 33 meters, has a lower part that dates back to the 16C. An arrow once topped it. At the beginning of the 18C, the bell tower threatened to ruin and, in 1727, lightning finished it. The upper part is therefore demolished, which was rebuilt from 1733 to 1741. The north portal is the masterpiece of the external architecture of the church. Covered with sculptures on two levels, it is the illustration of artistic conception in the 16C. The two low-arched wooden doors are decorated with Apostles to which Saint Armel is added. On the upper level, on the pier and on the outside of the windows, you see a fairyland of sibyls, saints and prophets. Remember that the sibyls are the only pagan elements integrated into the Christian world. They received the power of prophecy from Apollo. The presence of all these characters indicates that the north portal encompasses all the times of human history: pagan with the sibyls, Old Covenant with the prophets, New Covenant with the Apostles and the saints.

The tree of Jesse in the Church of Saint-Armel is interesting in more ways than one. It shines above a door, in the south aisle 6.50 meters high and around 2.10 meters wide, it is often presented in tourist brochures as one of the most beautiful Trees of Jesse in Brittany – and of course it is guaranteed 16C. The vaults ceilings of the Church of Saint-Armel are one of the marvels of the church. The large paneled barrel vault of the central aisle, built in the 16C, has three interesting elements: beams, sandpits and figurines. Awesome church indeed!

Ploërmel and its heritage!!

And moving righ along in architecturally and historically stunning Ploërmel in my beautiful Morbihan, of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France. The road warrior continues, well more walking in town always a pleasure, and small town pack with history is awesome!

You have read my previous post and even the older ones on Ploërmel, now let me give some historical and architecturally stunning ammunition to finish the tour and a place to eat , of course, we need to eat and do very well in Bretagne thank you.

The Dukes of Brittany had a hotel-mansion in Ploërmel, where they often resided. It was from Ploërmel that Duke Jean I write, on March 20, 1240, the edict ordering the expulsion of the Jews from his duchy of Brittany; that, on August 15, 1294, Duke Geoffroy summoned the Breton barons and knights to declare the number of mounted and armed men that each of them had to provide in time of war to form the army of the duke. Sixteen times, the States of Bretagne sat in Ploërmel: in 1240, 1309, 1315, 1394, 1408, 1411, 1428, 1442, 1498, 1521, 1523, 1580, 1587, 1606 and 1624.

Ploërmel heard in May 1418 the preaching of Saint Vincent Ferrier (see posts), and in October 1565 received the King of France, Charles IX; in 1667, the Duke of Mazarin; in December 1690, the exiled king of England, James II Stuart; in 1776, the Duke of Chartres; in 1828, the Duchess of Berry.

You will be delighted to walk in old streets and find marvels of architecture and history such as the:

Maison Bigarré 16C for Jean Bigarré, clerk of the royal court . The renaissance door is an enigma. The king of England recently dethrone James II Stuart stayed here in December 1690.

We stop by chance as it was right where  we were doing our walks. A splendid clean nice restaurant with fast and friendly service, and of course great views over the church and main square. The food was right but the plat du jour or main dish of the day was already gone! a rarity to have this by us but oh well its always a first time. We settle for the fish and chips and the portions were a bit smaller than we are used to but tasty , and we took down with a Rosé Un pour Tous from pays de Gascogne all for less than 19€ per person nice. No coffee as it was 26C too hot for it this time. We came home!

There you go folks, another wonderful road warrior trip and plenty to do and see and eat! All in my beautiful Morbihan, in land for a change of pace from the coastal areas. Ploërmel is nice, vibrant city and gorgeous monuments we need to be back for more. Hope you enjoy the tour

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all!!!

Ploërmel curiosities!

So continuing with my road warrior indulgences in my beautiful Morbihan of my lovely Bretagne and my belle France. This time I come to a town it has been a while not back with so much to see ,it happens. This is Ploërmel.

The city sits nicely in the road N166 Vannes to Rennes by the N24 but I took coming from Campénéac on the road D724.

Ploërmel (Plou-Armel) was founded in the 6C by Saint Armel from Ireland. Saint Vincent Ferrier was housed in a room in the priory house in 1418, during his visit to Ploërmel. It is also there that he miraculously heals a crippled child, who is presented to him by the priest Robert Juno, the 241st witness mentioned in the Inquiry. It is also in Saint-Nicolas that the Carmelites of Ploërmel were housed from 1592 to 1620, during the ruin and reconstruction of their convent.

The town of Ploërmel, is attested for the first time in 835 in the cartulary of Redon.   The city will then be honored until the 16C of the presence of the Dukes of Brittany for its strategic position. In the 16C, it entered the Royal domain. The city has a particularly rich civil and religious architectural heritage. The town is crossed by the national road 24 (RN 24) and the national road 166 (RN 166). Both very much use by yours truly!

The Leopard lion and it flag symbolise the fidelity of Ploërmel to Bretagne to defend the fatherland and its monarch. The town has always kept this distinction. Like many towns in Bretagne that were attack by king Charles VII in June 1487 ,Ploermel was the only one to resisted. Alain Bouchard said: so much the city was beaten that those who were inside were constrained to surrender ;the city was plundered and those who were inside were prisioner and taken to ransom or killed with the sword. One year later, Brittany lost its independence after the tragic defeat at Saint Aubin du Cormier. The motto is Tenax in fine,or tenacious in the faith. This given in 1816 by king Louis XVIII.

The Musée J M La Mennais at Place la Mennais .The La Mennais museum space presents visitors with some treasures of the congregation through a museum dedicated to Jean-Marie de La Mennais and a natural science museum. The first retraces the life of the  founder and presents his works, his personal effects, and in particular his precious library!  He ,also, participated in the creation of many schools in Brittany throughout the 19C. Also discover the updated presence of the Congregation in the world of education. End the visit with the renovated Chapel which houses the tomb of Jean-Marie de La Mennais. The Museum of Natural Sciences takes the visitor on an enriching object lesson in the form of a journey through time and around the world; collections of insects, bird nests, rocks, fossils, prehistoric tools, etc.  Access to the garden is free: an unsuspected haven of peace in the heart of Ploërmel!

The astronomical clock is located in the grounds of the House of the Congregation of the Brothers of La Mennais, in the center of Ploërmel. Originally installed in a classroom, it has been moved and housed since 1890 in a small octagonal glass kiosk, allowing it to be observed from the outside. The instrument has three parts: a hierological device, made up of a balance which triggers a trebuchet, which successively drives 250 toothed wheels and 1200 pieces of brass gears, which controls on one side a set of ten dials and the other side, a planetary. The astronomical clock is based on a pendulum beating the second. The mechanism, made up of a set of five weights, needs to be manually wound up every day. The device drives the dials using two axes, one rotating in 24 hours (solar day), the other in 23 hours and 56 minutes (sidereal day). The clock is the work of Brother Gabriel Morin , also known as Brother Bernardin. Mathematics, astronomy and navigation teacher, and without watchmaker training, he expressed the desire to illustrate his lessons. The imagined machine was built from 1850 to 1855 with the help of the students, in the evening after classes in the workshops of the forge of the Ploërmel brothers.!!

Christ Church Brittany began, in a very small way back in 1999, in Ploërmel. Brittany is a very large area and has many thousands of English speakers, either resident or visiting in the summer months. Many of those feel a need for an English speaking church and Christ Church is able to answer this need.  The church follow the Anglican tradition but the congregations come from a wide variety of backgrounds, traditions and denominations. The main worship is at 11h each Sunday. Christ Church is located in a chapel which stands on the corner of Rue Général Dubreton and Avenue de Guiborg. The building is a few minutes walk from the centre of Ploërmel on the road towards Vannes (N166). Parking is available on the main road running past the chapel or in the car park in the Place de Mairie, which is just a couple of minutes walk away. The library of 11,000 English books is open Friday and Sunday mornings. La Source Choir meets Friday, Social events organised once per month.
