So will be around La Gacilly for the next few posts as this is a sentimental town we finally came back. Not wanting to repeat from previous posts will let you do the reading.
I like to tell you a bit more on La Gacilly, Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne in my belle France. The town of La Gacilly is the home of the famous cosmetic firm Yves Rocher labs La Gacilly is 13 km from Redon, 49 km from Vannes, 51 km from Rennes and 75 km from Nantes.
This, me think, will be a good spot to tell you a bit about the history I like
The history of the town resumes the characteristics of that of the three former towns of La Gacilly ; La Chapelle-Gaceline and Glénac. With the two towns of La Chapelle-Gaceline and Glénac, it gave birth to the new town of La Gacilly created with the administrative status of new town on January 1, 2017.
La Chapelle-Gaceline comes from the first name Waceline, (first name from the Middle Ages) that one of the lords of La Gacilly adds to the name of La Chapelle, in memory of his wife Gaceline de Montfort. The town of Glénac is surrounded by the towns of Bains-sur-Oust in Ille-et-Vilaine (dept35) , Saint-Vincent-sur-Oust, Peillac, La Gacilly, and Cournon, and Les Fougerêts in Morbihan (dept56). Duke François Ier in 1442 married to Isabelle Stuart here.
At the reformation of 1427 under the name “Les Alleux”, the manor and accommodation of La Forêt Neuve belonging to the Lord of Rieux . In May 1570, owned by the Calvinist Paul Coligny de Rieux, it welcomed King Charles IX and Queen Catherine de Medici, his mother. The Maréchal de Rieux, guardian of the Duchess Anne de Bretagne ( twice queen of France), had this castle built in 1625 on the edge of the forest on the ruins of a former hunting resort built by the de Rieux family in the 15C. The castle was ruined during the French revolutionary unrest. He emigrated in 1789 to England. After his death, his cousin the Duke of Sauls-Tavannes claimed on July 29, 1816, the castle of Forêt Neuve, the site of the old castle of Rieux The castle was rebuilt in 1826 by the count Auguste de Foucher de Careil, owner since 1825, married to Caroline Surcouf daughter of the famous Saint Malo privateer corsair. This castle has a frontage of 42 meters and a depth of 21 meters and is located at the edge of the forest from which it bears the name, and in a dominant position over the whole countryside.
There is a wonderful covered market here or Halles and a nice looking restaurant, never tried it ,the Brasserie des Halles next to the Church, 20 place Yves Rocher. However, the main thing here is on the back there is the covered market or Halles of La Gacilly! It present market gardeners (fruits and vegetables), cheese makers, fishmongers, delicatessens and butchers, crepe makers, oyster farmers, producers of chickens and roast chickens, prepared Senegalese meals, etc. It is officially open only on Saturdays from 8h to 13h , however, this Sunday was open perhaps due to the photo festival (more later post).
Due to the virus it was closed for a long time but now for the last month or so it has been open again for the delight of all like me! This time there was only some fruits and vegetable stands but small portion of it usually is.
What was all around it was a plant and flower market! Gorgeous ambiance we love and my dear late wife Martine was a passionate about these, memories now seeing it.. I am sure we would had purchase a plant or two,,but with poor farmer me we left empty handed. It was great thus recommended.
