Locmariaquer and its beaches!

And here I am around a familiar town only 28 mins from my house on the Gulf of Morbihan in wonderful Locmariaquer. There are several posts on the town and its attractions, these are new text and photos. Hope you enjoy it as we do

The fine sandy beaches are protected by rocks that uncover at low tide. These bushes extend from the island of Méhaban to the beaches of Saint Pierre. These are Plage de Saint-Pierre, Plage du Brénéguy, Plage du Toul Keun, La grande plage – La Falaise, Le Rolay, Plage de l’école de sailing, Plage Valy, and Plage de Kerinis. All wonderful but I prefer the Plage de Saint Pierre or La Grande Plage.

Pentue and wild , the plage Saint-Pierre beach will delight lovers of nature and relaxation. Surrounded by the dune of Saint-Pierre and the charming little wood of the Pointe Er Hourel tip, it promises pleasant walks. You will be amazed by the number of kite surfers who take advantage of this windy bay at high tide. At low tide, the pond becomes a paradise for birds which make themselves a real feast. On the other side of the pond, there is the beach. Quiet, stretching over a little over a kilometer, you can bask in the sun in summer, or take the opportunity to collect seashells when the water cools.

The plage de La Falaise beach, also called the large beach, is very popular with families. It is located due south and overlooks the ocean. It is famous for fishing on foot during high tides. Protected by the dunes, the ideal place for lazing around extends over several kilometers. It is also very popular with shore anglers at high tides, who can easily find clams, curries, shrimps and clams. Curved and secure during the season, the Falaise beach allows safe swimming. The accessibility of the surroundings, with a pedestrian zone layout, makes it also ideal for walking. Its fine sand and its breathtaking view of the Quiberon peninsula to the right and the Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys tip to the left, have made it famous. Whether the sea is calm or rough, whether it is windy or not, all water and land sports can be found on this large beach.

You have my favorite spot on beaches in France plages tv on the beaches of Locmariaquerhttps://en.plages.tv/seaside-resorts/locmariaquer-56740

The statue of Our Lady of Kerdro, Pointe de Kerpenhir: 2.70 meters high, it was carved in granite by Jules-Charles Le Bozec in 1946 but stayed for 16 years in the church before being erected in its location in 1962. It replaces a statue erected in 1883 and destroyed by the Nazis at the same time as the fort, during the occupation. Arrived on the Pointe de Kerpenhir, you are at the entrance to the Gulf of Morbihan, and you see, in front of you, Port Navalo and the bottom of the Gulf, towards Ile aux Moines, Ile d’Arz and Vannes. On the bay side, you will undoubtedly be able to see the peninsula of Quiberon, Belle île, the island of Houat and, in clear weather, the island of Houedic. The coastal path will take you to the table des Marchand stone (merchant table).

And the above starts the big beach of Locmariaquer that continues into the Falaise. All beach front magical with picnic tables and vast soft sands all around you. Enjoy it as we do

Gallo-Roman remains were discovered to the east and south of Locmariaquer during the 18C. Since then, new research indicates thermal baths, a wall, other walls and burials. The locality was probably an important city of Antiquity. It has been advance the hypothesis that Locmariaquer could have been a place of residence of the Breton king Waroch.

This is an old town with many menhir or megaliths stones around ,done several posts on the monument here and will come back for more. However, for today let me tell you about the port or harbor area of Locmariaquer!

It is a cruise harbor, fishing village, with good beaches and megaliths ancient stones all in one. The port of Locmariaquer is an old coastal fishing port dating from the beginning of the 20C. Located at the entrance to the Gulf of Morbihan, opposite Port-Navalo on the Rhuys peninsula, the port of Locmariaquer offers a panorama of the Gulf of Morbihan and the Auray river.

If the Romans of antiquity already knew the natural deposits of the flat oyster, it was not until the end of the 19C to see oyster farming appear. The town of Locmariaquer was then considered the cradle of the flat oyster. The first concessions in the Auray river were issued in 1882. But in 1973-1974, the flat oyster of the Gulf of Morbihan was decimated, even wiped out by two parasites. It was then that the culture of the Japanese oyster was introduced. Today, the oyster farmer has become a cupped oyster farmer in the Gulf and Saint-Philibert river or ria. The flat oyster is harvested and farmed mainly in the bay of Quiberon.

The contact is at Les Viviers de Loc’Ker (Ets Percevault), route de Kerpenhir. Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lesviviersdelocker

The town of Locmariaquer is located at the western mouth of the Gulf of Morbihan and has many beaches overlooking the bay of Quiberon, the western part of Mor Braz which opens access to the Atlantic Ocean.
