Sights of Morlaix!!

And having been around Morlaix for a while, let me tell you where we ate and other miscellaneous sights of this picturesque town of the dept 29 Finistére in my lovely Bretagne!

Let me give some nice spots in the city of Morlaix, and wonderful to walk by it as we love to do once in town.

The Battle of Morlaix is a battle of the Sixth War of Italy which took place on July 22, 1522 in Morlaix. Count Guy XVI of Laval falls on the last he finds arrested in a wood near the sea, cuts them in pieces and takes back the booty they had seized He makes such carnage, that a nearby fountain, reddened that day with the blood of enemies, received and keeps the name of Feunteun ar Saozon, fountain of the Saxons or the English ; better known locally as the fontaine des Anglais or English. The fountain is located in Cours Beaumont, at the entrance to a small garden, opposite the tabac factory.

The city or town hall of Morlaix as for architecture. The name in Breton of Morlaix is Montroulez . It is more likely that Morlaix takes its name from the Latin appellation of the Roman settlement Mons Relaxus. The city of Morlaix webpage: City of Morlaix

The bandstand or kiosque à musique was donated to the city of Morlaix by Auguste Roparts president of municipal music in 1903. The bandstand is located at Place des Otages … near the viaduct.

The Morlaix museum can be visited on two sites, Les Jacobins and the Maison à Pondalez.. The first, Les Jacobins, in place of an old 13C convent, is the original site of the municipal museum c1887. It now houses works from the museum’s collection and temporary exhibitions. The Maison à Pondalez, dating from the 16C, impresses the visitor with its monumental granite fireplace, its spiral staircase, which serves the rooms on the street side, as well as its wooden passages or pondalez which give access to the rooms on the courtyard side. This part of the museum presents the history of the city of Morlaix on four levels. There is a renovation and rehabilitation project for the Jacobins convent and its church, which should last until autumn 2023. See opening hours. City of Morlaix museum: City of Morlaix museum

And last but not least, the wonderful historicall house of Anne de Bretagne. There are several in Bretagne on places she visited some true some not, this one is true. It is at 33 rue du Mur.

The House known as the Duchess Anne, is a jewel of the Morlaix heritage located in the old market hall, was built around 1530. It is the most beautiful preserved example of a lantern house, a type of architecture characteristic of Morlaix of the Renaissance. The term lantern refers to the covered courtyard in the center of the building, originally lit by a pendant light. This courtyard is particularly remarkable here for its height of 16 meters, its “pondalez” gallery staircase all in oak, richly carved, 11 meters high and its monumental fireplace dating from 1520-1530. The term “pondalez” in Morlaix designates the galleries leading from the spiral staircase to the rear rooms. This house, unique in its quality, is private, but it has been open to visitors continuously since 1983. It houses a monumental fireplace and a spiral staircase, in richly carved oak, which guarantees passage between the rooms at the front and those at the back, over three floors.  The tourist office of the Bay of Morlaix on the Maison dit Anne de Bretagne in French: Tourist office of Bay of Morlaix on the house of Anne de Bretagne

And finally , we ate wonderfully at a great ambiance cafe overlooking a wonderful square with views of the viaduc! This was the Grand Café de la Terrasse. All dress up with its taste of yesteryear, is a must to be here. A brewery since 1885, the establishment, located on the Place des Otages, has indeed evolved while retaining its charm of yesteryear. As soon as you enter, you are struck by the chic of the room, the splendor of the period ceiling and the presence of the grand staircase. The welcome is friendly, the cuisine is done with taste and without fanfare. You can also enjoy the terrace and the warm decor for a simple coffee during the day. Morlaix and its theater!

Ok so this one will tell you for the architecture and history of it. Some of my true love hobbies because not yet been inside. This is the Thêatre Municipal de Morlaix,in the Finistére dept 29 of my beloved region of Bretagne.

We go up and side ways all over here, vast region and so much to see, we are trying harder… Even if now with one big member missing going out is harder. Let me tell you a bit more of the theater of Morlaix.

The story goes that at the end of the 19C, two events in local life were to help the city build a new theater; the first is the arrival in Morlaix of the railway, connecting this city to Paris, after the construction of the railway bridge; the second is the death in 1875 of Count Paul-Ange de Guernisac, friend of the arts and notable very attached to his city. By will, he left Morlaix a sum of money for the construction of a performance hall. At the end of 1886, the municipal council voted to build the theater. The inauguration took place on April 14, 1888, and the first curtain raiser was for the Comédie Française.

The facade of the Morlaix theater is simple and austere and comprises a ground floor and an upper floor. The middle bay, marked by a balcony, is crowned with a triangular pediment containing the inscription theater and a bas-relief representing an allegorical figure of music, Harmony. The Italian room, elliptical in shape, can accommodate 600 persons. The dome ceiling, painted in tempera by the Maison Diosse, rises 12 meters above the parterre. Against a background of blue sky and landscapes, between twin columns, succeed white and golden banners and medallions representing four or five loves. The town of Morlaix has affirmed its specificity with the ornamentation of the proscenium boxes; one of the coats of arms represents black ermines on a white background, symbol of Breton independence, and the other represents a boat, symbol of the port activities which made Morlaix prosperous.

The Maison Pénanault of Morlaix !

Ok continue with my ride in wonderful Finistére dept 29 of my lovely Bretagne region of my belle France. It never cease to amaze me the beautiful architecture and history found all over even from the tiniest villages to the big cities. I have been several times here and have posts on it but have not told you about the tourist office of Morlaix!

Oh yes it is a beautiful house call the Maison Pénanault! Let me tell you a bit more on it. As it is not often we can talk to visit a tourist office for its architecture and history!

Morlaix

The Maison Pénanault of Morlaix is today the tourist office at 10 place Charles de Gaulle. The house is located on the edge of the old port of Morlaix, now covered, the Maison Pénanault is distinguished by a majestic facade of schist and granite. Its Renaissance decor, very sober, testifies to the wealth of its owners. Built at the end of the 16C, the Maison Penanault has a courtyard, carved into the rock, housing a gallery adorned with three beautiful granite columns. The house also includes 4400 m² of terraced gardens, also called Morlaisian “combots”.

It is today the home of the Tourist Office and the Center for Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage (CIAP), the house welcomes visitors in its four exhibition rooms, permanent and temporary, dedicated to exploring the territory of the Pays de Morlaix . Two temporary exhibitions per year confirm the desire to offer a varied cultural and artistic program, which allows to capture the key moments in the history of the territory. The role of the different heritage players, between heritage and contemporary creation, is introduced with simplicity and conviviality. The Maison Pénanault and its exhibitions are freely accessible to the public. However, guided tours of Maison Pénanault are available all year round by reservation at the Tourist Office.

Morlaix

The Maison Penanault is located exactly where the port of Morlaix was, the third largest port in Brittany after Nantes and Saint-Malo, used to accommodate the docks which housed the goods to be loaded or disembarked. The house takes its name from the Breton penn an aod which means “the end of the quay”. Established on a strategic commercial location, the house testifies to the wealth and nobility of its owners. The owner, a noble merchant from Morlaix, probably began the construction of the house after the wars of the 16C, around an old watchtower away from the walled city. An architectural performance of 700 m² made exclusively in stone, when the Morlaisian houses were still all half-timbered. Its monumental staircase, its large reception hall, its U-shaped construction and its immense gardens bear witness to its grandeur and prestige.

Morlaix

Over the next 400 years, around ten successive owners occupied the premises. The courtyard of Maison Pénanault also reveals its wonders to visitors, including the Morlaix zebra schist which is found on the front of the house, associated with the granite of the l’île Grande and of the l’île Callot islands in Renaissance settings. The open gallery, located under the half-timbered wing covered with slate, revealed its secret during the construction: Three imposing granite columns have resurfaced. The half-timbered wing supported by these columns, a rare architectural element, has been the subject of the greatest care. Deposit and transported to a workshop where it has been completely restored, the half-timbered wing was then rebuilt identically in the courtyard. The hanging gardens, these famous Morlaisian “combots”, develop on 5 terraces and 4,400m². These gardens, which offer superb panoramas over the city of Morlaix, are home to a wide variety of plants.
