Shopping:Restaurant: VIPS and MediaMarkt in Madrid of course!

So, therefore, after posting about the monuments and sights of my beloved Madrid will go into the places of shopping and restaurant with a series Restaurant: XXX Madrid or Shopping: XXX Madrid. Hope you enjoy them and do try them when visiting Madrid the food and shopping is an experience to behold in lovely Madrid. For lack of creativity ,I will copy this first paragraph into the subsequents posts! ::)

Once again I am combining Restaurant and Shopping in one post but for a good reason. I know these brands from even my living in Madrid. VIPS is very well represented in Mexico (where I have visited them too!) ,and for good reason as you will see soon. These stores had a electronic/ high tech look and a cafeteria next to it. The concept was carried into Spain but recently they have been remodeled into just restaurants. MediaMarkt opened in France where they did not do good but in Spain they are growing and the one we visited was open just a couple years ago. They are into electronics/high tech only.

Grupo Vips is a Spanish multi-brand and multi-format group in the restaurant and commerce sector. Integrate restaurants and cafes. The company manages a total of seven chains on property or under franchise: VIPS (cafeteria-restaurant and store), VIPSmart, Ginos, The Wok, T.G.I. Fridays, Starbucks Coffee and Wagamama in Spain, Portugal and Andorra. In addition, the group has a sandwich, salad and other vending machine selling products, British Sandwich Factory (BSF).

In 1965 the Mexican entrepreneur Plácido Arango returns to his father’s land (Spain) to establish the new supermarket model that, together with his brothers, he had created in Mexico in 1958, the Aurrerá Supermarkets. In the growth of the supermarket chain, in 1969 he extended to Spain the new concept of restaurant and shop under one roof called Vips (and this is where I got to visit them in Madrid) and that was triumphing in that country. In 1975, the entrepreneur sold the 23 Spanish Aurrerá supermarkets to Galerias Preciados but did not include the sale of Vips restaurants to the department store chain, being the origin of the current business group still controlled by its founder. In October 2018, the Vips Group is acquired by the Zena Alsea group.

Alsea is a Mexican company dedicated to the representation and operation of global brand restaurants in Mexico and Latin America. It manages some restaurants such as Domino’s Pizza, Starbucks Coffee, Burger King, PF Chang’s, California Pizza Kitchen, Vips Restaurants, Italianni’s, The Cheese Cake Factory and Chili’s in Mexico, Vaca Argentina, Archie’s in countries like Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Spain. In 2013, it signed a contract to bring the PF Changs brand to Brazil and the exclusivity was signed to bring the well-known casual dining brand The Cheesecake Factory exclusively to Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Peru.

They are family places with a nice menu and good prices where there is a blend of international foods. We tried the VIPS this time at the Calle de Alcalà 200 almost across from the Monumental Las Ventas bullring!

MediaMarkt is a chain of large stores, dedicated to the sale of household appliances, computers and consumer electronics, belonging to MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group, a subsidiary of the German group Ceconomy. The first establishment opened on November 29, 1979 in Munich. Currently, it is the largest European consumer electronics retailer. The first Media Markt store in Spain was opened in 1999, in San Sebastián de los Reyes ; in the Centro Comercial Megapark shopping center. MediaMarkt has 87 physical stores in Spain today.

MediaMarkt opened on May 11, 2017 a new store in the central Plaza del Carmen. This is the store we visited just for nostalgia’s sake. We had visited them in France and with its sister stores Saturn also of German origins. Now gone from France and Spain. However, this store is in a very busy commercial area even if when we were there it was almost empty. There is a lot of competition in this field all over. The best about is near Puerta del Sol and plenty to see and do so give it a shot and compare your prices.

And for a one two punch of shopping and quick inexpensive cafeteria this is it even if not close by you can plan your day of shopping at MediaMarkt and eating at VIPS closer resto. Hope you enjoy this combination. And enjoy my beloved Madrid!

Remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all!!!
